The name Cortana comes from an character of a same name from an Xbox exclusive game series "Halo". Jen Taylor, who voiced the game character, did the voice for Cortana !


Circular Orb on the screen, represents Cortana's pulse. To let the users know what she is doing, it will spin, rotate and changes shades, which represents working, thinking and speaking.


She has a peculiar character, more like a human and has a ability to strike up casual conversations with users, what Microsoft calls "chitchat." Some other known personality traits are Confident, caring, competent, loyal, helpful but not bully.


Cortana maintains a track record, like a real assistant and it contains what she know's about you. If you don't want Cortana to access your phonebook, you can remove her. You can also ask her  "Do you love me?", tell her "I love you", ask Who is your daddy? and expect funny answers.


If you don't wish to give her a voice command, you can also type to her. You'll find an empty text field in the bottom, where you can type anything you want and Cortana will respond in text as well.


Now in Windows 10, Project Spartan, the next generation web browser will have the company's Cortana voice assistant built in, to assist with Web search functions. And generally, it has reminders built-in, such as location based reminders, person based reminders.


Cortana app has feature, that developers can integrate API of Cortana with third party app and assign certain functions of the app with voice commands.


On the entertainment part, she can sing a song for you on your request. And you can also ask Cortana "Tell me a story." Certainly that voice should certainly soothe you to sleep at night.


Cortana remembers what you asked before and can link it with your latest request.


Microsoft is still working on making it better before it hits millions of Windows Phone users around the world. It is officially only available in US but you get access to it anywhere by changing some settings. Moving on to PC, Cortana plays the important role in several aspects.
