WhatsApp to bring new data privacy option in May
WhatsApp to soon let users have a control over their data.
While the WhatsApp Payments feature is yet to be rolled out to all the users, another information has surfaced online. WhatsApp is reportedly prepping a new data privacy option that is in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) proposed by the European Union. The GDPR is all set to become effective starting from May 25, 2018 and is meant to harmonize the data privacy laws.
According to a blog post by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is likely to revamp its data privacy option. The latest Android beta version 2.18.50 that has been submitted to the Google Play Beta program. This beta version of the app has revealed that the new data privacy option will be effective on all the platforms owned by Facebook before May 25.
As soon as the new data privacy option comes into effect, WhatsApp users will be able to download a report of their data from the Account Settings. There will be a new option called 'Download my Data' under Account Settings. On clicking on this option, users can create a report of their data from their account.
It is also revealed by the screenshot that the file with the data can be ported to another service or can be maintained for backup. Once this report is ready, WhatsApp will also notify the users. The screenshot reads, "We will send you a notification when the data is ready. It further reveals that it might take around 20 days and that the report will be deleted in 30 days from the server.
WhatsApp has just started testing this new feature that will bring a new data privacy option to the users. It is believed that the feature will be rolled out to the users before May 25 this year.
In August 2016, the instant messaging platform said that it will share the data of the users with Facebook, its parent company. This news started created a buzz on the internet and the government many countries asked WhatsApp to stop the data sharing process. Even the Supreme Court of India asked WhatsApp and Facebook to reveal if the user data is being shared with the third-party entities.
