Samsung Galaxy Camera vs Nikon Coolpix s800c: The War of Android Camera Has Commenced

Nikon Coolpix s800c

In August, Nikon unveiled its Android powered Coolpix s800c camera, which was the first Android based camera in the industry. Recently, Nikon announced this camera for a price of Rs 20,950 in India.

Talking about the specifications, 3.5 inch OLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixel resolution, Cortex A9 processor, 2GB internal storage, 512MB RAM, micro SD card slot, 16MP BSI CMOS sensor with 10x optical zoom, Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS and a 1,050 mAh Li-ion battery delivering 140 photos per charge.

Whats Good?

Well, the new Nikon Coolpix s800c camera will house the likes of the older version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

The current Android version is Jelly Bean, which is version 4.1, so for the Nikon S800c to use Gingerbread, which is version 2.3, might sound a little bit backwards. On this Nikon has arguably suggested that the camera is known for its stability, plus this is a camera, so it doesn’t have and doesn’t need all the soft keys, voice-activation control and processor-intensive capabilities.

With its built-in Wi-Fi users can connect to a network to surf the Web or open up the Google Play store and start shopping.

At the same time, tech experts have pointed that Nikon Android camera has fast and responsive touch interface, good image quality, excellent colors and most importantly it is light-weight.

What's Bad?

Talking about the cons, reportedly Nikon Coolpix s800c has a shorter battery life when compared to Samsung Galaxy Camera and of course, when compared it runs on the older version of Android.

Verdict

Being Android cameras, both Galaxy Camera and Coolpix s800c offer complete support to Google Play store, however, there are some differences when it comes to hardware and software as they are from different manufacturers.

Detailing on the Samsung product, it has a larger high definition display and runs on the latest iteration of Google's OS – Jelly Bean and hence, it will have software features including Project Butter, expandable and contractible Android notifications, resizable app widgets, improved Android Beam and many more as compared to the Nikon camera running on the older version of Android.

If the concern is on the recent version of Android, larger display real estate, better battery backup and increased optical zoom, the Galaxy Camera is a better option.

On the other hand, if you are highly concerned on the size and usability of the device, the light-weight Nikon offering should be the right one.
