Asus Taichi vs Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga: Fight Between Windows 8 Tablet/Laptop Convertibles Begin

Microsoft's latest OS Windows 8 launched almost a month back also flooded the tech arena with loads of new device announcements. One of the big themes with this touch-centric Windows release is touchscreens on everything including Ultrabooks, tablets with keyboard docks, or new all-in-one convertible PCs. Analysts believe that this is the best time to buy touch-enabled laptops, notebooks and hybrids. 

 

Already 14 OEM partners of the software giant including Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HCL, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo and others have been making different types of devices from tablets to hybrids announced to enter the Indian market. 

 

Out of which, two such innovative devices are Asus Taichi – the dual display notebook-tablet hybrid and Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga – 360 degrees convertible ultrabook. Both the devices are based on Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT platforms, are announced for India release. Hence lets take a look at the specifications comparison between the duo to have a look at how they stack up against each other.

Dimensions & Weight: Taichi carries a dimension of 306.6 x 199.3 x 17.4 mm and weighs in at 1.25 kg, whereas IdeaPad Yoga boasts a dimension of 333.4 x 224.8 x 16.9 mm and weighs around 1.54 kg.  

Display: In this segment, Taichi has dual 11.6 inch mulit-touch capacitive touchscreen LED backlit displays – both with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution.  

On the other hand, IdeaPad Yoga has a 11.6 inch LCD multi-touch capacitive touchscreen display with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. 

Processor & OS: The Asus offering runs on Intel's Ivy Bridge processors and is based on Windows 8 Pro, whereas, IdeaPad Yoga is based on Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and runs on Windows RT OS. 

Storage: In terms of storage, Taichi has 1.6GHz 4GB DRR3 RAM and 128GB/256GB SATA SSD flash memory. In comparison, the Lenovo offering has 2GB DDR3 RAM and 32GB/64GB SSD flash memory.

Camera: When it comes to camera optics, Taichi has a 5MP 1080p auto focus camera and a HD 720p camera, while IdeaPad Yoga has a 1MP 720p HD integrated webcam.

Ports: Taichi has a mini VGA port, 2 USB 3.0 ports and a micro HDMI port, whereas, IdeaPad Yoga has 2 USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port and a 2-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC).

Connectivity: While both the devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity features.

Battery: While Taichi has a 35Whr delivering up to 5 hours backup, IdeaPad Yoga has a battery that can offer 13 hours of usage.

Price: While Asus Taichi is priced at Rs 1,39,999, IdeaPad Yoga is estimated to be priced at Rs 65,000 approximately.

Verdict

Both Taichi and IdeaPad are hybrid and convertible devices based on latest Windows OS. Detailing on Asus Taichi, it is a combination of notebook and tablet and has double sided display to switch seamlessly between different modes.  

On the other hand, IdeaPad Yoga is the world's first multimode ultrabook with 360 degree flip design. The multimode PC can be used as a laptop, tablet, tablet with kickstand and in tent mode.  

If the concern is on a display with a better resolution, backlit keyboard, increased storage options and better camera, Taichi should be the better option.  

However, for those concerned on more battery backup, lesser price tag and multiple modes of operations, Lenovo offering could be the right choice.
