Samsung Chromebook Series 5-550 review

A new improved version of Samsung Chromebook Series 5 – 550 is out in the market. Samsung has introduced some enhancements to this laptop models to attract business users and students. Of course there is some variation in price tag too, though it is small and negligible.

Google has introduced a slightly higher version of OS, Chrome 5 making it much more user friendly. This includes a basic photo editor, offline doc editing and also desktop-like space making it more convenient for launching and switching between apps. You can also create easy short cuts on the screen bottom for better user convenience.

The keyboard is pretty well designed compared to Samsung"s previous models. This one has deeper keys with little sound on typing. We can use them for longer period of time, be it in surfing or doing our day to day functions without feeling any discomfort. The trackpad performance is improved a little bit offering more precise output. This can attract business users and students who spend a lot of time on their laptops.

Samsung Chromebook Series 5 - 550 features a matte screen of 12.1-inches. The 300-nit screen offers good brightness level making it convenient for use even in bright sunlight and outdoors. Pretty comparable resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels adds to this user friendly display. The audio quality of this Samsung laptop is not that impressive as it delivers a lower sound even at the maximum volume level. The response of the speakers is also not that fast.

The processing is powered by dual-core Sandy Bridge Celeron processor as compared to Intel Atom processor which was the driver in previous version. Built in flash storage of 16GB and also 4GB of RAM adds to the processing efficiency. The battery life has slightly come down from last year"s 10 hours to just 6 hours. This makes it inconvenient for long time usages and need to keep a charger along with you especially when you travel.

A built-in 3G radio is also offered with Samsung Chromebook Series 5 – 550 like last year"s Chromebook and it provides data speeds of 1.07 Mbps up and 2.48 Mbps down delivering a good browsing experience.

The price tag of Samsung Chromebook Series 5–550 has gone up slightly to Rs. 25,000/- from last year"s Rs. 20,000/-. This price change is however not considered important as there is significant improvement in processing efficiency and user experience factor.
