With the Apple Watch set to hit store shelves in April, the Cupertino-based tech giant seems to repeat the history with yet another fascinating product.
The Apple Watch captured everyone's imagination when it was first released, with many largely expecting it to cost as high as Rs. 300,000.
Latest reports, however, have suggested the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition could cost a whopping $10,000 (approximately Rs. 622,449). If true, the Apple Watch could be considered the first luxury smartwatch to hit the market.
So far, Apple has only announced pricing for its Apple Watch Sport, the entry-level smartwatch that's set to be made available for $349 (approximately Rs. 21,785) in April in the US.
Previous reports have claimed that the Apple Watch would cost as high as $5000 (approximately Rs. 300,000), although according to Daring Fireball's John Gruber, it may cost a fortune to buy Apple's first ever wearable gadget.
"I can see which way the wind is blowing," Gruber stated in an online blog post. "For months I've been asking friends who might know - or know someone else who might know, or even know someone who knows someone who might know - whether my guess of $5,000 is too high for the Edition starting price. The answer has always been "No".
He further added: "I now think Edition models will start around $10,000 - and, if my hunch is right about bands and bracelets, the upper range could go to $20,000. I was off by a factor of two, and my friend Vincent, I think, nailed it back on the day Apple Watch was introduced."
According to a recent report by the WSJ, Apple has ordered between five million and six million units of the Apple Watch from their supplier for the initial production run. Orders of the top-notch 18k gold Apple Watch Edition are expected to be limited in the initial production run.
