Intel Inks Deal With Luxottica For Fashionable Smart Eyewear
Italian luxury eyewear maker Luxottica and chipset giant Intel will work together to create smart eyewear that users might be interested to wear.
In a statement released on Dec. 3, Luxottica announced that it has struck a deal with the Intel to "push the boundaries of research and development to anticipate what smart technology for eyewear will look like in the future."
It seems that Intel is finally ready to invest aggressively in the wearable segment. Earlier this week the company, it was reported that Intel would supply chipsets for the next-generation Google Glass.
Through our collaboration with Luxottica Group, we will unite our respective ecosystems and bring together Intel's leading-edge silicon and software technology with Luxottica's design innovation and consumer expertise," says Intel CEO Brian Krzanich. "We expect the combination of our expertise to help drive a much faster pace of innovation and push the envelope of what's possible."
The newly announced deal should be looked out in a positive way. Luxottica has an expertise in making fashion-forward eyewear. The Italian company, Luxottica, is behind the iconic brands including Ray-Ban and Oakley. The company also manufactures for licensed luxury brands such as Chanel, Dolce & Gabana, Prada, Burberry and Georgio Armani, among big names.
"The growth of wearable technology is creating a new playing field for innovation," Krzanich said in a statement. "Through our collaboration with Luxottica Group, we will unite our respective ecosystems and bring together Intel's leading-edge silicon and software technology with Luxottica's design innovation and consumer expertise. We expect the combination of our expertise to help drive a much faster pace of innovation and push the envelope of what's possible."
The first device to come out of the Intel-Luxottica partnership is expected to come out in 2015.
