Qualcomm Toq: Chipset Maker Enters SmartWatch Market, All Set for Release in Q4

|

Chipset maker Qualcomm announced "Toq", a rival smart watch to Samsung Galaxy Gear at the ongoing IFA tech show. The Toq marks the coming of Qualcomm into yet to tested wearable computing market. Players like Apple, Google and LG are already working on their respective smart watches. The Cupertino-based tech titan would announce iWatch early next year. The company says the world "Toq" simply means "talk".

The Qualcomm Toq works similar to Galaxy Gear, which was announced late last night. With Qualcomm Toq, users will be able to check notifications, receive calls, text messages, calendars and more. The smart watches use a new kind of display technology called Qualcomm Mirasol.

The display used to make Toq is different, says Qualcomm. Mirasol uses interferometric modulator display, which sits between traditional LCD and E Ink. It is seen that E Ink technology gives power saving mechanism, whereas LCD is best for color reproduction. Being powered by Qualcomm Mirasol technology, the capacitive touch screen is always on - making the device works like "traditional watch." Moreover, the Qualcomm Toq has no power buttons. Qualcomm specified that the Toq comes with long lasting battery life.

"Toq's always on, always connected, always visible wearable technology gives you a ‘Digital 6th Sense,' telling you what you need to know, when you need to know it, with just a glance at your wrist or a whisper in your ear. Toq is a showcase for the benefits of the Mirasol display, WiPower LE and stereo Bluetooth technologies and highlights the experience that the wearable category can provide," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman and chief executive officer of Qualcomm. "

The Qualcomm Toq is also world's first smartwatch to use WiPower LE wireless charging technology. The company has also planned a "Premium Audio Edition" of Toq featuring wireless stereo headphones. The availability of Toq is still unclear. Lastly, Toq is compatible with Android 4.0.3 or above. The device will be available for $300 (Rs. 19,795) in the US market.
