Samsung Launches WiFi-Only Variant of Gear S Smartwatch
One of the most awaited smartwatches so far was the Gear S from Samsung which can make independent phone calls as it comes with a SIM card slot. The smartwatch is already available in India and other markets around the globe.
However, what came as a surprise recently is the new varaint of the same Gear S smartwatch. Not that it is anything different than the regular Gear S but this one comes as a WiFi-only varaint. Samsung has launched this variant of the Gear S in Japan for ¥38,880 (Approx. Rs. 20,365). The WiFi-only version of the Gear S is currently offered by Japanese carrier KDDI au while the and NTT DoCoMo is selling the SIM card slot equipped Gear S.
The difference between the two smartwatches is seen in the respective product pages, as the DoCoMo page lists a SIM Ejector as an in-package accessory but it is missing from the product page in AU website. As per the information on the product page, even the GPS connectivity of the Gear S seems to be missing.
Samsung Gear S: Key Specification
The Samsung Gear S sports a 2 inch (360 x 480 pixels) Super AMOLED Curved display. It is powered by a 1 GHz Dual-Core processor coupled with a 512MB RAM.
It runs on Tizen based wearable platform and houses 4GB internal memory. Since there is a SIM card slot in the device, the device is capable of making 2G and 3G calls as well via Bluetooth. The intelligent watch comes with a IP67 Certification and thus it is dust and water resistant.
