Looks like Rovio want's to capitalize on the popularity of Angry birds game in every way they can. The Finish company has announced that it will be launching it's Facebook game Angry Birds Friends to iOS and Android platforms. Angry Birds Friends combines the classic Angry Birds action with Facebook's social features, bringing in weekly tournaments, score share, amongst others. The social network game is said to have picked up 60 million installs and 15 million monthly active users, in the same year as the launch (May of 2012).
This is indeed a right move by Rovio as current trends dictate, free to play games with in-game purchases are more sought after compared to the paid modules. The popularity of Angry Birds franchise should make the new addition, a valuable one for the company.
Rovio also announced its financial results for the full calendar year of 2012. The company's games revenue and consumer product sales, totaled to €152.2 million compared to €75.6 million in 2011. Which means, the revenues have doubled.
Come 2013, Rovio is stepping it up in terms of keeping it's fan engaged with it's content, as it has launched a number of news games and products. The company has even launched Angry Birds Toons channel. Also, the company claims, game downloads have exceeded 1.7 billion this year.
Mikael Hed, Rovio CEO in a blog post said ""We have had a stellar start for this year. In addition to our successful games portfolio we recently launched our first Angry Birds Toons series through third party partners and our own in-game distribution channel. We will continue to strengthen our position in the entertainment business through continuing to innovate on our existing brands, exploring creating new IP as well as exploring opportunities with external parties,"
There is no official news on when Angry Birds Friends might be released for iOS and Android, but is expected to make way in May.
