In-Ear
In-Ear headphones sit directly inside ear canal. In-Ear headphones come with two benefits: they sit closer to the ear drum, that provides excellent sound quality and avoids external noise.
On-Ear
On-Ear headphones rest on top of the ear, just like the in-ear headphones, the on-ear headphones also directly sound straight to the ear canal, but don't seal out external noises.
Over-Ear
Over-Ear headphones encase the entire ear. The larger sized earpads makes room for a larger driver to produce louder volume and better bass performance. The over-ear produces a more spacious sound like what you hear from speakers.
Open or Closed Back
You'll find a headphones that are described as either open back or closed back. Actually it refers to whether the back of the earcups are open or sealed.
Closed back headphones offers better noise isolation and produce more sound similar to in-ear headphones. While, the Open back headphones don't offer noise isolation, but produce more natural sound.
Drivers
The drivers are the most important components in the headphones, which turns an electrical signal into sound pressure. Well, there are different types of driver are are measured in millimeters. Generally, the larger the driver, the better the sound. For over-ear headphones, a driver of 40mm or larger is a great deal.
Sound Pressure Level
Sound Pressure Level, commonly known as SPL, are used on headphones spec sheet. The SPL indicatet how loud the headphones can sound.
Impedance
Impedance is a measure of electrical resistance. In other words, higher impedance means more resistance. Headphones that are designed for mobile devices come with lower impedance and use less power. While pro-quality headphones have very high impedance, but it requires a dedicated amplifier to power them.
Frequency
It indicates the range of audio frequencies the headphones can reproduce. Most headphones have frequency response of around 20 to 20,000 hertz.
Total Harmonic Distortion
It shows the level of distortion while using headphones at a high volume. Most headphones come with less than 1 percent of THD and high-end headsets are even considerably less.
Noise Cancellation
You might be familiar with the term noise cancellation headphones. They create an inverse sound wave and feed it back into the headphones to effectively cancel out the sound.
