First of all, get yourself a microfiber cloth. And if you don't know what that is, ask your nearest optician to provide you with one. This is the best way to get your screen clean. Of course, there are better ones that you can get for a simple price.

Turn off your device completely before you can start off with the cleaning process. It's better that way since there are chances that you might accidentally hit the power on button during the process that could lead to other complications.

Once your are ready, start off by cleaning the screen with the microfiber cloth in small circles. This is the best way to get most of the smudges out of the screen, and any other imperfection there might be.

If the smudges are long lasting, try dampening the cloth a bit for more effective usage. For simpler smudges, you could just breathe on the screen and get done with it. Otherwise, use a bit of distilled water on the cloth.
