14 Google Maps Features You Never Knew Existed
If you thought that Google Maps are only for showing direction from one place to another then think again! Because we are about to show you some of the amazing Google Maps features that you probably didn't knew existed. So here are the 14 Google Maps Features that will surprise you.
1. Time Travel
Ever wondered how things have changed in the neighbourhood and tried to recall how it looked like earlier. Well you can do that with Google Map's Time Travel feature in the Street View Mode. All you got to do is click on the small clock icon on the top left corner and you will get a timeline of the street. (Though this option is not available at every location.)
2. Fly Like Superman
Well you can fly like the superman without wearing the cape and without leaving your house. Thanks to Google Earth with the tilt view option you can get a 3D flyby look at the world. The tilt view is at the right-hand bottom corner of the Google Earth. Unfortunately it's only available on desktop.
3. Book Flights
When travelling cross-country or state, the airplane icon in Google Maps can provide you a link to the available flights. It can also provide you with the details of estimated fare and the time it will take to reach the destination.
4. Multiple destinations trip
When on a multiple destination tour, no need to add the locations to & from again & again. Just click on the '+' add sign below the address bar and keep on extending your tour as you go.
5. Checkout Upcoming Events
By clicking on any icons such as Movie theatres, Concert Halls, Exhibition Galleries or any other venues, Google Maps while show or a provide you with a link to all the upcoming events at that particular venue.
6. Save Addresses & Maps
You can save some of the major addresses that you frequently visit or start your journey from like for example home & office address. Similarly you can also save a particular regions Map if you know that it might be difficult to get an internet signal over there. This way you can even access the Map while being offline.
7. Create Maps
Sometimes you may come across a shortcut or a new way that is not available on Google Map. During such moments one can actually suggest and add the missing route on the Map by using the Map Maker Function. But don't try to fool around as Google first verifies your suggestion and then only makes the necessary changes.
8. Access Lite Mode
If your internet connection is lagging or you have a limited pack then you can choose the Lite Mode for navigating. Basically you won't be able to use services like Google Earth but will be able to see the street view though. The Lite Mode is denoted by a lightning bolt icon in the right bottom corner.
9. Measure Distance
You can measure any distance from anywhere, just right click on the Map and select the starting location. Now once you select the destination location it will automatically calculate the total distance between these two locations.
10. Travel For Free
With Google's Street View Treks now you can explore your favourite travel destinations like never before. They provide you with a walkthrough of the entire place making you feel that you are almost there in real.
11. Indoor Navigation
We know how a simple task as finding a loo or a particular store or an elevator can become difficult in huge buildings. That is why you need Google Maps Indoor navigation tool that helps you deal with it. However, only few options are available for navigation until now.
12. Traffic Indicator
You can also have real-time traffic data by clicking on the traffic link. Plus it will also give you an option to choose between 'Live Traffic' and 'Typical Traffic' which means the expected traffic patterns at specific times.
13. Quick Navigation
When in need for instant turn by turn directions then just touch & hold the blue icon for train/car/pedestrian (whichever way you travelling) and your navigation will begin immediately.
14. Be a Local Guide
If you know your neighbourhood very well then you can become a Local Guide. You will earn points for adding more insights and tips in the Google Maps. And as you make a progress in exchange you might start getting early access to Google products, exclusive invites to Google meet-ups and even extra space on Google Drive.
So in the words of Optimus Prime 'Google Maps is like...There is more to it than meets the eye'. Hope you will enjoy exploring this new found features and make good use of them.
