Priming the battery
The first and foremost step to take when getting a new laptop is to prime the battery or in other words, charge it to its full capacity. This may take 8-9 hours and it is the most important part of the setup of a new laptop.
Cycling the battery
Leaving the battery in a dead discharge will render it useless. But of course, since your using the laptop on a regular basis, such a scenario may not happen. It is, however, important to charge the device once in a while to keep the battery in a healthy state.

Partial usage
As mentioned before, it is vital that you charge the battery every once in a while. At the same time, ensure that the battery does not lie in an idle state. The laptop must be powered once in a while even when not needed.
Unplug it
Most importantly, do not leave a fully charged battery on a laptop when connected to AC power connections. This will damage the battery due to the heat.
The life a Lithium-ion battery is bound to reduce over a period of time, and it will be useless no matter what. But extending the life of the battery can be done with careful usage and maintenance.
