On Wednesday, Apple unveiled its sixth generation highly anticipated iPhone 5 at the special media event in San Francisco.

While Cupertino giant's next iPhone will land in India by December, however it is released in the international market at the same price of its predecessor iPhone 4S. Also, the successor is designed on the similar lines of the original iPhone and has been unwrapped by the Apple with quite a few extraordinary software features accompanied with heavy duty specs.

The much hyped smartphone is now expected to rival the Android and Windows Phone 8 heavyweights in the market including Galaxy S3, HTC One X and Nokia Lumia 920 with its super powerful touchscreen, new OS and faster processor.

However going by the records, the predecessor iPhone 4S till now has turned out to be an amazing device, thanks to its faster processor, outstanding UI and the unique Siri feature.

However, with the official launch of the iPhone 5,the big question in the minds of the current iPhone 4S owners would be “Should I buy iPhone 5?”

Form Factor: Measuring 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm in dimension and weighing around 112 grams, the iPhone 5 is slimmer and lighter than the iPhone 4S, which boasts a dimension of 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm and weighing around 140 grams.

Fabricated completely using glass and aluminum, the iPhone 5 is claimed by the company to be the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever.

Display: Coming to the display, the iPhone 5 houses a larger 4 inch LED-backlit IPS capacitive touchscreen display (lacks Retina Display) with 1136 x 640 pixel resolution and 326 ppi pixel density approximately.

On the other hand, the iPhone 4S packs a 3.5 inch LED-backlit IPS capacitive touchscreen display with 960 x 640 pixel resolution and 330 ppi pixel density approximately.

Both the displays are protected with Corning Gorilla Glass and oleophobic coating.

Processor: iPhone 5 is equipped with a new Apple A6 chipset, which is smaller and more powerful than the Apple A5 chipset in the iPhone 4S.

Operating System: In this segment, the iPhone 5 undoubtedly runs on the iOS 6 – the latest mobile OS launched by Apple at WWDC 2012, while the iPhone 4S runs on the older iOS 5. Further, the iOS 6 boasts over 200 new features including improved interaction with Siri, native mapping, higher Facebook integration and more.

Camera: Both the iPhones have an 8MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection and HDR. Also, the camera can capture high definition 1080p videos @30fps.

However, the new camera in iPhone 5 will include features like backside illumination, a hybrid IR filter, a five-element lens and f/2.4 aperture. More features include spatial noise reduction, a dynamic low-light mode, and faster photo capture. Further, Apple has also introduced Panorama mode, which will allow users to take large horizontal panoramic images with their camera. According to the iPhone creator, these wide images can clock in at up to 28 megapixels and more.

Further, iPhone 5 has a 1.3MP front camera for video calling while 4S has a VGA camera.

Storage: On the storage front, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S come in three configurations – 16GB/32GB/64GB, each with 1GB RAM.

Connectivity: When it comes to connectivity, the iPhone 5 being the latest version packs DC-HSDPA 42Mbps, HSDPA 21Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Plus Cellular, Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP and micro USB 2.0.

On the other hand, iPhone 4S has HSDPA 14.4Mbps, HSUPA 5.8Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP and micro USB 2.0.

Battery: According to Apple, the iPhone 5 is loaded with a Li-Po battery offering 225 hours standby and 8 hours talk time, while the iPhone 4S is packed with a 1,432 mAh Li-Po battery offering 200 hours standby and 8 hours talk time.

Software Features: iPhone 5 based on the iOS 6 mobile platform is loaded with several new features including Dictionary Everywhere, iTunes synchronization over Wi-Fi, Advanced gestures, new game center, iCloud cloud storage, Newsstand, new camera app and photos, deeper Twitter and Facebook integration and more.

Price: When it comes to the pricing, Apple has retained the same price tags for the iPhone 5 with $199 (approx. Rs 11,000) for 16 GB, $299 (approx. Rs 16,500) for 32 GB and $399 (approx. Rs 22,000) for 64GB respectively, which is the same as iPhone 4S.

At the same time, iPhone 5 steps away from the classic charger ports that have been in use for Apple products since 2003. the iPhone marked a farewell to the 30-pin dock and has introduced Lighting, a reversible 8-pin connector that's approximately 80 percent smaller than the previous charger port.

The new smartphone will also come with EarPods, Apple's latest (and supposedly more comfortable) version of earphones. Hence, at almost similar price tags, Apple iPhone 5 is definitely an upgrade from iPhone 4S and will come packed with numerous pilot features compared to the predecessor.
