Apple iPhone 5 vs HTC One X: Clash of Apple Biggie And The King of Android

Since the launch of the iPhone 5, the tech media world has been busy comparing the specs and features of the new Apple smartphone with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S3 and Nokia Lumia 920, however many of them the 'King of Android' smartphone – HTC One X.

 

Price at Rs 34,999 in India, HTC One X has plunged a stiff competition against Samsung Galaxy S3 and other super smartphones in the market. The quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked Android device was announced at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona in February and since then it has been getting a lot of attention for being a serious threat to Samsung's next best addition and now Apple's next iPhone.

 

If you are going for a phone upgrade and are confused, here is a brief comparison to give an idea on which one suits you the best.

Dimensions: Boasting a dimension of 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and weighing around 112 grams, the iPhone 5 is thinner and lighter than the One X, which measures 134.8 x 69.9 x 8.9mm and weighs in at 130 grams.

Display: When it comes to the display, iPhone 5 packs a 4 inch LED-backlit IPS capacitive touchscreen Retina display with 1136 x 640 pixel resolution and 326 ppi pixel density approximately.

On the other hand, HTC One X sports a larger 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 IPS capacitive touchscreen display with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution and 312 ppi pixel density.

Processor: In this segment, the iPhone 5 is equipped with a new Apple A6 chipset while the One X has a quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset clocked at 1.5GHz.

Operating System: The main distinguishing feature between the two smartphones, as the iPhone 5 runs on iOS 6 while the One X runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC Sense UI. Also, it is to be noted that the latter will receive the Jelly Bean roll out very soon.

iOS 6, the latest version of the Apple’s mobile OS is loaded with 200 new features including Apple Maps, improved Siri, new Safari app, iCloud cloud storage, deeper integration to Twitter and Facebook and more.

In comparison, when it comes to the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the OS is also packed with a plethora of new features including Project Butter, on-screen navigation buttons, expandable and contractible Android notifications, resizable App Widgets, high resolution contact photos, Android Beam app and many more.

Camera: Both the smartphones have an 8MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection and 1.3MP front facing camera for video calling.

However, iPhone 5 has a iSight camera which includes features like backside illumination, HDR, f/2.4 aperture, spatial noise reduction, dynamic low-light mode and faster photo capture. Moreover, the iSight camera is the first Apple camera technology to support panorama mode. However, HTC One X camera has a faster aperture speed.

Storage: On the storage front, iPhone 5 comes in three configurations - 16GB/32GB/64GB and 1GB RAM. On the other hand, One X has 32GB flash memory and 1GB RAM.

However, both the handsets lack a micro SD card slot for expandable memory support.

Connectivity: On the connectivity front, iPhone 5 has features like DC-HSDPA 42Mbps, HSDPA 21Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Plus Cellular, Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP and micro USB 2.0.

In comparison, HTC One X is packed with features such as Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth with A2DP and micro USB 2.0 and USB on the go and Beats Audio sound enhancement feature.

Battery: According to Apple, the Li-Po battery in iPhone 5 offers 225 hours standby and 8 hours talk time while HTC One X is powered by a 1,800 mAh Li-ion battery delivering talk time for more than 8 hours.

Price: While the official price of iPhone 5 in India is not known, analysts assume that it will be priced at Rs 50,000 approximately while the One X is available in India around a price tag starting from Rs 36,099.

Verdict

From the comparison, it is evident that the smartphones have similar hardware and only minor changes. Already, it is well known that the iPhone 5 has missed out features including NFC, which is common in the high-end smartphones of the current generation.

On paper, HTC One X defiantly has more features when compared to iPhone 5, however we will need to wait to give the final verdict till the time iPhone 5 is not released in the market and we do not get a hands on the new Apple phone.
