Corning has unveiled the new iteration of its toughened glass model dubbed Gorilla Glass 5. This new model from Corning is a chemically strengthened cover glass that will offer a great level of protection against the drops and everyday usage.
Better protection from drops
Corning has revealed that the Gorilla Glass 5 will offer better protection against the drops from a height of up to 1.6 meters even on rough surfaces. This way, the Gorilla Glass 5 is better than its predecessor launched in 2014. Notably, even the Gorilla Glass 4 offered great protection from heights of up to 1 meter.

Gorilla Glass 5 vs Gorilla Glass 4
The Gorilla Glass 5 is claimed to render up to two times improvement in damage resistance over Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and up to four folds improvement over its alternatives. It is also claimed to provide up to 1.8 times improvement over Gorilla Glass 4 in drop performance, especially on rough surfaces.
People tend to drop their phones
As per a study that Corning has quoted, the smartphone users are prone to drop their handsets more often. The study shows that over 85 percent of them drop their phones at least once a year and over 55 percent of them have dropped their phones over three or more times a year.
It further states that 60 percent of the users have dropped their smartphones from their waist or shoulder level too. This way, it is known that users are dropping their phones out of their pockets or when they are using the camera.
Up to 80% survival from drops
Going by Corning's statement, the new Gorilla Glass 5 model is designed to provide a better protection against most of the common drop case scenarios. This new toughened glass model cis claimed to offer up to 80 percent survival rate even when the devices are dropped face-down from heights of up to 1.6 meters. This includes drops on rough surfaces as well.
Gorilla Glass 5 will pave way for thinner devices
The Gorilla Glass 5 is quite thin measuring just 0.4 mm. This way, the manufacturers can use this glass model to make rigid smartphones that are thinner. Different smartphones with varying Gorilla Glass 5 thickness might see different results.

Fall flagships might feature Gorilla Glass 5
The Gorilla Glass 5 is available now and we can expect the flagship models that will arrive this fall to feature the Gorilla Glass 5 glass model on them. However, an exact time frame is awaited from Corning.
