As noted, the commercial launch of Reliance Jio gave a tough competition to top incumbent telecom players, including Airtel and attracted hordes of people around the country to queue outside Reliance stores to get their Jio SIM cards.
However, the same cannot be said for Reliance Jio's Lyf series smartphones that comes at a starting price of Rs. 2,999. While they offer a slew of benefits to consumers at affordable prices, the handsets fail to match the likes of Chinese and other Indian smartphone makers in terms of hardware and user experience.
The latest to join the Lyf series line-up is Reliance Lyf F1, which is launched at a price of Rs. 13,399 and will be available from Reliance Digital stores by today itself.
Now the big question is, whether it's a decent buy or is just good for Reliance Jio benefits? Let's try to answer this with the following points.
First thing first, What's in the package?
Since now, Reliance Lyf handsets offered sub-par hardware and features that fails to match the likes of Chinese and other Indian handsets. But with Lyf F1, Reliance is offering a good overall package.
We are not including the Lyf Earth 2 smartphone in this discussion because it priced at Rs. 19,999 and is the most expensive device in the lineup.
Competitive Hardware and Features
Coming back to Lyf F1, the dual-SIM (Micro+Nano) smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The display offers a respectable pixel density of 400ppi, which is more than enough to watch videos, play games and read texts.
Lyf F1 is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC, coupled with 3GB of RAM, which once again seems good to execute everyday tasks and also to handle games, full HD video playback and multitasking.
Besides, the smartphone has 32GB of inbuilt storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB) and is powered by a 3200mAh non-removable battery that is claimed to last all day. And as noted, you will get 4G and VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.1, Micro-USB, GPS, and 3.5mm audio jack connectivity options.
Other Notable Benefits
Reliance is also offering a free Bluetooth speaker worth Rs. 3,000 with the handset and has also announced a 10 percent cashback offer for Citibank cardholders. Moreover, interested buyers will also get a Reliance Retail gift voucher worth Rs. 15,000.

In addition to good hardware and exciting offers, Reliance has also integrated Rich Communication Services (RCS) in the handset, which allows for more enhanced calling and messaging features over the sim card itself. The service offers support for group messaging, sending emoji and files, as well as file and location sharing. As per company, the calling features are also enhanced by RCS, allowing for video calls, screen-sharing and multimedia sharing during the call itself. Users can also append images, geo location, notes and specify the urgency of a call with the new Lyf F1.
Seeing all the above benefits, competent hardware and of course the bundled Reliance Jio benefits, we can say that Lyf f1 is the first handset in the series that seems a decent buy.
The smartphone offers everything you would want from a sub Rs. 15,000 handset and offers the much wanted Reliance jio 4G benefits without any hassle of generating codes and getting the Reliance Jio 4G SIM.
We will reserve our final verdict till we get our hands on the smartphone, but for now Reliance Lyf F1 seems to be a good sub Rs. 15,000 smartphone.
