Xiaomi Mi5 is a long awaited flagship device from the Chinese smartphone maker. Fortunately, though the company has cleared the air by confirming the launch of the device on February 25.
Rumors and leaks regarding the upcoming device however, hasn't stopped flowing in. In fact, it is now coming from official quarters thank to frequent leaks by Xiaomi VP, Hugo Barra and President, Bin Lin themselves.
While the launch is still a fortnight away, here's a roundup of all that's known about the upcoming device. This is primarily a specs run down along with confirmed and unconfirmed rumours and leaked camera samples.
While it was initially rumored that the Xiaomi Mi5 will eventually come with a Quad HD (2560x1440p) panel, the company President Bin Lin spilled the beans a few weeks ago. Making use of a Weibo post, he confirmed that the Mi5 will come with a 1080p display instead.
This mayn't be quite a good news for those super resolution lovers, but the 1080p display definitely indicates at an improved battery life. Well, an improved SoC performance too.
Back last year rumours had cropped up which stated that Xiaomi will be making use of Synaptics Force Touch technology for the display of the Mi5. This isn't quite a surprise considering the hype around this new display technology post the launch of the Apple iPhone 6S.
As reported earlier Xiaomi Mi5 will indeed pack a Snapdragon 820 chip on the inside. Hugo Barra has in fact, officially confirmed the news soon after Qualcomm showcased the first SD820 powered device at CES,2016.
Xiaomi has got rid of the three capacitive touch buttons on the bottom of the display and replaced it with a Samsung like rectangular home button along with two other capacitive buttons for menu and back.
Incidentally the designers at Xiaomi has also incorporated the Fingerprint Sensor on the Home Button. The implementation is similar to what was seen in the Meizu MX5 or the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Xiaomi is reported to launch two variant of the Xiaomi Mi5, just like the previous occasion. Previous leaks indicate that the Mi5 will come in two storage variants - 32GB and 64GB. Apart from the difference in storage options, the two variant will come with two different RAMs. While the 64GB storage variant will feature a 4GB unit, the 32GB will come with a 3GB RAM.
While technical specifications of the cameras of the alleged device hasn't leaked as of yet, Xiaomi President Bin Lin has posted two images shot from the Mi5 on Weibo. This was closely followed by the leak of yet another sample image, and this time by Hugo Barra.
As per previous reports the Xiaomi Mi5 will pack 16MP rear camera which will probably make use of the Laser Autofocus technology. Apart from that the front may feature a 13MP selfie snapper. However, the sensor size of the front snapper appears like an 8MP unit.
Xiaomi Mi5 is tipped to sport a large 3600mAH battery which is expected to deliver an improved battery performance. This is markedly larger as compared to the 3080mah unit in the Mi4. The battery life will however depend on the Snapdragon 820 chip. In case it overheats like the SD810, it will take a toll on the battery life of the Mi5.
