Xiaomi Mi 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S7: Premium Flagships Fight Hard on Price Cuts

On Monday, Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge received the first price cut in India reducing their cost by Rs 5,000. You can purchase the Galaxy S7 and Rs 43,400 and the edge variant for Rs 50,900 respectively.

Following this luring price cut alert, there is another one as Xiaomi has slashed the price of the Mi 5 flagship smartphone by Rs 2,000. The device is now available for purchase at Rs 22,999. The highlight is that this is a permanent price change.

Design and Build

The Xiaomi Mi 5 looks pretty premium and it features a refined design that comes in Black, Gold, and Silver color options. The Galaxy S7 is highly premium with a glass and metal body design that was introduced with the Galaxy S6 in 2015. The device features curvier edges making it pretty comfortable to hold. The glass and metal design make it sturdy, superior and classy as well.

Also, Galaxy S7 features a water and dust resistant build giving it an edge over the Xiaomi offering. Both have fingerprint scanners as well that are fast and accurate.

Display

When it comes to the display, the Mi 5 features a 5.15-inch FHD 1080p IPS LCD panel. On the other hand, the Galaxy S7 has an upper hand with a 5.1-inch QHD 1440p Super AMOLED display that is power efficient. Also, the Galaxy S7 comes with the Always On feature that gives a peek at the notifications without consuming too much of the battery power.

Processing Power

Both the smartphones are powered by the powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor teamed up with the Adreno 530 graphics. The phones are capable of running smoothly without much glitches in terms of performance. The processor is capable of handling multitasking with a smooth performance.

RAM and Storage

Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage capacity that can be expanded up to 200 GB using a micro SD card. Both the variants have 4 GB of RAM. In comparison, the Mi 5 features 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB or 64 GB of internal memory capacity. The higher end variant of the Xiaomi Mi 5 comes with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space.

Camera

Both Xiaomi Mi 5 and Galaxy S7 feature superior imaging capabilities. There is a 16 MP main snapper with the Sony IMX298 sensor on the Xiaomi smartphone along with 4-axis OIS for sharper images even while clicking subjects that are in motion. There is a 4 MP front-facer with an aperture of f/2.0 and 80-degree wide angle lens.
Samsung has shifted its focus on the pixel size with a 12 MP main snapper that has a wide f/1.7 aperture for better low light imaging. There is OIS and faster PDAF for better imaging performance. Up front, the Galaxy S7 has a 5 MP selfie shooter with f/1.7 aperture.

Software

The Xiaomi Mi 5 runs on the MIUI 7 interface and it is all set to get the MIUI 8 update soon. This update will add many new features to the device that make it superior. The Galaxy S7 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and the TouchWiz UI.

Battery

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is given a 3,000 mAh battery that is teamed up with Quick Charge 3.0 that charges the phone 20 percent faster than Quick Charge 2.0. The Samsung flagship also uses a 3,000 mAh batter and it supports both fast charging and wireless charging.
