There have been some pretty big and important announcements that have already been made at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) event from big names such as Samsung, Nokia and Sony. However, it's not only the big names that have captured the minds of people, but a few smaller ones as well that have also come forward with whatever they have to offer.
And among a number of such companies, one such manufacturer is the China-based Gionee which recently showcased its newest offering in front of the world, dubbed Gionee Elife S5.5. Apparently, going by the claims made by Gionee, the Elife S5.5 is the slimmest smartphone in the world.
With just 5.55 mm of thickness, the Gionee Elife S5.5, announced back in February 20 in China, is said to have been "developed through Gionee's deep understanding of customers' desire for a slim and powerful smartphone to also act as a fashionable accessory."
"We believe smartphones are both consumer electronics products and decorative artworks. A new approach with a focus in design is needed. We explored the design aesthetic of the smartphone from the standpoint of the fashion origins, emphasizing smartphones as a stylish identity for end users," said William Lu, President of Gionee.
"The ELIFE S5.5 is crafted with a distinct metallic frame and Corning Gorillas Glass Uni-Body. It uses the world's thinnest AMOLED Screen, thinnest PCB board with a 0.6MM and 0.4mm glass rear cover."
As far as the overall specifications are concerned, the Gionee Elife S5.5 sports a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED screen. The smartphone is powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core processor that's coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory.
Also, in terms of the in-device camera specs, the Elife S5.5 comes equipped with a 13-megapixel primary rear camera with 95 degree ultra-wide angle. The primary camera is also assisted by a 5-megapixel front-facing secondary camera.
There also a non-removable 2300mAh Battery present in the device, although, contrary to the popular domestic expectations, the device does not support dual SIM compatibility.
Apart from that, Elife S5.5 runs via the company's Amigo UI built on top of Android Jelly Bean 4.2 OS. The device also offers two different shooting modes - the professional and normal camera settings, alongside a number of other in-device camera modes that offer more power to the overall imaging capabilities of the device.
The Gionee Elife S5.5 is currently priced at $370 (Rs. 22,929, approx.) and is expected to be made available in India in March this year.
