Rumored for months, Taiwan based HTC finally revealed a GoPro-style action camera called the HTC RE -- marking its first major entry in a new product category. The launch event took place on Wednesday in New York City. HTC calls its new rugged take-it anywhere camera as a "remarkable little camera".
Investors have been waiting to hear something extraordinary from the makers behind the HTC One (M8).Finally HTC on Wednesday unveiled a range of exciting products, including the RE camera. HTC's RE camera, is seen as an entirely new product category for the company, which until now focused its energies around smartphone manufacturing.
HTC's RE camera doesn't look similar to the GoPro action camera in respect of design. The new camera has a cylindrical design, though it closely resembles to a small periscope. Like GoPro's camera, the HTC-made RE camera is rough & tough, and, of course, waterproof (IP57), too.
It does seem more comfortable to carry and mount than the GoPro camera, which sounds good to ears. Being a super cool action camera, you can mount the device easily to capture pictures even while doing extreme actions.
The HTC RE camera uses a large 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with an Ultra wide angle: 146° lens (f/2.8). Users can shoot videos in 1080p at up to 30fps video or 720p at up to 120fps slow-motion video. There are time lapse options as well.
HTC's RE camera's battery is rated at 820mAh, which means you can shoot 1 hour and 40 min of continuous Full HD video recording without worrying about battery draining. The camera has an 8GB of native memory, which further can be expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card slot. In addition to having built-in Wi-Fi, the HTC RE camera also has USB 2.0 support and Bluetooth v4.0. It works with HTC Zoe app, too.
Your photos, videos and time lapse recordings seamlessly over WiFi, thanks to a compatible app available on Android and iOS platforms. User can also control the whole device remotely through the app and transform your smartphone into a remote viewfinder.
Overall, the HTC RE offer versatility, and just simply better design aesthetics. For years, if you wanted to buy an action camera you would buy GoPro due to lack of options. Now, HTC has jumped into the crowded rugged action cameras category. Well the device is too new to be rated just on the basis of specs or highlighted features, but we think this might be an answer to GoPro camera range.
The RE camera will be made available in the US sometime during holidays from a variety of retailers, including Best Buy and Amazon among others. The device will cost $199 or Rs. 12,000 and be available in teal, orange, navy blue, and white.
