If you follow the smartphone market closely, you will know that the market is filled with big name handsets that not only pack a punch, but have also made their way into most of the wishlists around the world.

Sure, the Indian market has been booming with the arrival of budget devices. But owning a big name smartphone is worth more than you can vouch for. And it's no surprise that most of the users do usually end up spending their cash on devices such as the new Galaxy S5 or even the other Nexus range of devices.

The Indian smartphone market, in recent times, has seen a lot of action from all the parts of world with smartphone makers arriving with their own offerings.

According to International Data Corporation, smartphone sales in India grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013. And in fact, that number was helped by affordable devices made by local firms like Micromax and Karbonn.

However, keeping our imaginations fixed on the high end part of the market, there are a number of devices to choose from. For the moment, we are keeping our focus fixed on the two heavyweights in that bracket: The Google Nexus 5 and the new Samsung Galaxy S5.

While Samsung has made quite the name for itself owing to the deep popularity that has been garnered via the release of a number of Galaxy devices, HTC is still trying to make it big in this growing market. And the One M8 is as good a way as you will come across.

So what is the outcome if we are to take both the smartphones in the same bracket and compare them against each other? Here's a detailed comparison between Samsung Galaxy S5 and the new HTC One M8.

There's no real distinction in this respect. Both the devices anyway come running Google's Android operating system. In fact, both of them come bearing the Android KitKat operating system: The latest Google has to offer in terms of its mobile platform.

As far as sizes and shapes are concerned, the HTC One M8 comes sporting a Super LCD3 capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels. The device itself comes in a 5-inch form factor and weighs in at 160 grams, while the dimensions measure up to 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 mm.

The Samsung Galaxy S5, comparatively, comes with a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touch screen, while rendering 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. The device's overall dimensions measure up to 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm, with the device also being comparatively lighter, weighing in at just 145 grams.

The HTC One M8, in the camera department, offers a Dual 4 MP primary camera, sporting a mammoth pixel resolution of 4160 x 3120 pixels, with autofocus and dual LED flash. The device also has a secondary 5-megapixel camera on board that's more than enough for conducting video chats. So that's something new to the competition.

The Samsung Galaxy S5, on the other hand, sports a greater primary 16-megapixel camera, sporting a pixel resolution of 5312 x 2988 pixels, with autofocus and LED flash. The device also has a secondary 2-megapixel camera on board.

Winner: HTC One M8

As expected, both the devices come sporting coming of age processors under the hood that are more than enought to carry out almost everything that you could think about on your phones.

While the HTC One M8 comes sporting a quad core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 processor with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 chipset, the Galaxy S5 from Samsung is powered by an octa core processor Adonis Prime2 (Quad 1.9GHz + Quad 1.3GHz) + XMM6360.

The HTC One M8, in this respect, offers 2GB of RAM while offering the device in a 16GB internal memory variant. Moreover, there's the option to expand the device's memory up to 128GB as an external microSD slot for additional memory is also present.

Big devices require big battery units to keep the devices juiced up for as long as possible. And both the device make sure they are fitted with the best. While the HTC One M8 juices up this Android KitKat-powered device via a 2600 mAh battery, the Samsung Galaxy S5 comes sporting a 2800 mAh battery.

Pricing is a major factor, as far as the Indian smartphone market is concerned. And needless to say, both the devices are with price tag that compliments their offerings. While the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been listed with a price tag of Rs. 34,909, the HTC One M8 is available at Rs. 48,600.

As you may have noticed by now that both the devices, more or less, offer similar specs. With their latest Android OS, big batteries, increased RAM and improved cameras, both the One M8 and the S5 are here to stay.

However, if we were to seek out a winner in this respect, taking all the offered specs and the price tags into consideration, it has to be said that the S5 stands out in this rivalry. Although more is needed to be said takin every factor as one. But for the time being, we are taking the S5.
