'Should I buy this one or something else....?' is one common question which crosses your mind when buying a smartphone. Also, this is one question that every technology writer gets to reply million times via a phone call or a mail or through a simple chat with readers.
Now with the advent of the KitKat version, the Android users are experiencing some sort of 'high' along with the manufacturers who are bringing it out in bulks, not to be ironic though.
In fact, this update became frequent and some sort of treat from Google for Android smartphone users. The extent of this 'high' we are referring to here is such that you will hardly find any smartphones being launched with lesser than v4.4.2 of Android, if the latest entrants are to be observed.
Now to make it even simpler for you, GizBot has come up with a comparative review between the three latest budget phones running on the latest Android KitKat OS. These are Lava Iris X1, Micromax Unite 2 and Xolo Q600s. What you can find here is a blueprint of finding out, how to choose a best budget Android KitKat smartphone inthe market. That's not it, further, it will help you select one from the lot according to your requirements and budget.
However, it should be noted that the comparative review is not a moral-based review or the answer to the question that we started off with, but it is in itself a result of an experience that we have had using the three phones for a while.
After this declaration, let me tell you that the comparison will be based on display, camera, processor performace, UI, OS, battery, features and among others.
Now without taking much of your time, let me take you off to the review now, which will be followed by a verdict later. Lets go ahead with the sliders below:
First off, technically speaking, the largest one in the lot is the Unite 2 from Micromax with 4.7-Inch display while the Xolo Q600s and Lava Iris X1 comes with a smaller 4.5-Inch ones. But all these use a similar IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen technology.
Resolution-wise, the best one is Xolo Q600s it features a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and also a highest 245 ppi pixel density compared to the other two devices.
In GizBot's experience, the crown to the best display would be offered to the Xolo Q600s. The screen is pretty bright and though it consumes a bit of a battery, it does make a lot of difference when you take the phone in the bright daylight.
Starting with the specs, both Xolo Q600s and Micromax Unite 2 features a 5MP autofocus camera with a single LED flash, which can shoot pictures with a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels, and video at 720pixels quality. You will get features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, panorama as well. In the front face of the Xolo phone, you will find a VGA shooter, while the Unite 2 bears a 2MP module.
Lava has used a better camera modules in Iris X1 smartphone. The phone comes with a 8MP rear camera with autofocus and a dual LED flash. It can shoot a video at a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels and can shoot video at full HD resolution. This one also comes with a 2MP front facing shooter.
Camera-wise, as we tested them individually, the Micromax Unite 2 gives a crispy color texture and superb saturation and hardly distorts the real color. But since it has a lesser MP camera module, once you zoom in, the image gets pixelated very easily.
On the other hand, the Xolo Q600s shoots the images in a rich resolution but distorts the natural color very easily and it will also automatically give a shades of different hue depending on the light condition which affects it. But the best part is that when you zoom in, the images don't gets less pixelated compared to that of Micromax Unite 2.
Lets take a look at the technical readings first. The Lava Iris X1 and Xolo Q600s both come powered by a Broadcom BCM23550 processor which comes clocked at 1.2 GHz and it is a quad core SoC. On the other hand, Micromax uses a Mediatek MT6582 which comes 0.1 GHz more than the earlier one.
The former two features a Broadcom VideoCore IV GPU and the latter one comes with a Mali-400MP2 graphics. And all the three devices uses 1GB of RAM. As told you earlier, all these devices come with Android KitKat version 4.4.2 OS.
To compare technically, the VideoCore IV GPU which the both, Lava and Xolo use come with are better than the ones used by the Micromax. It supports OpenGL ES 2.0 which the Mali graphic unit doesn't.
Apart from that everything is in the for of MediaTek CPU used by Micromax. However, if both are compared to the Snapdragon series from Qualcomm, they will fail miserably.
But if you are looking to buy a phone with a better power and processor, it's the Micromax, that you should be voting for.
Moreover, event in the Menu, the icons are projected in a bit larger sizes in the Micromax Unite 2 smartphone. Further the notification panel is also comparatively cleaner that the other two phones.
All the three devices are pretty much similar if rest of the aspects are to be compared. For example these phones come with an identical 4GB internal memory. But the memory expansion options is offered up to 64GB in Xolo Q600s compared to 32GB in Micromax and Lava phone. All the three phones come with a similar connectivity options along with a Dual SIM slot.
Battery-wise, Lava Iris X1 has a least capability as it is powered with a 1800mAh Li-Ion battery, while the remaining two comes powered by a 2000mAh cell caliber.
Since the Xolo Q600s has a brighter and crispier display, it will obviously consume more battery. So, depending on that, Micromax Unite 2 might last longer with the display on.
Out of the three phones, one of the best features that is related to battery power comes with the Xolo phones. Xolo has offered an app which enables users to cut down the battery usage in many ways. This is the Xolo Power app.
Without being biased, the verdict is very complicated in most of the cases. However, since we have already promised you that, without any wax on it, among the three lets consider the best one as Xolo Q600s.
Since it has very affordable price-range, and comes with an added power app, and a better display, you can easily take this one as the best one. But again, power-wise, its the Micromax Unite 2. Xolo Q600s features a very handy design and is the thinness ant lightest among the three.
