2014 may just have started, but the year has already been marked by a number of major smartphone releases that have provided a probable hint on as to how the year will eventually turn out - smartphone-wise.

While there have a been a number of high profile releases with only the first month of the new year about to come to a close, there have also been a number of standout releases that could easily set a benchmark for other manufacturing companies for the rest of the year. And two such devices that are looking to set a benchmark while also climb the top of the table in the smartphone market race are the LG Nexus 5 and Gionee E7.

LG Nexus 5 Vs Gionee Elife E7: When Heavyweights Clash

Chinese phonemaker Gionee, honestly speaking, hasn't really had that prominent a presence in the smartphone market. However, the company is now looking to make up for the lost time by introducing its latest offering in the market in the form of Elife E7.

For one, the company says that its new device packs the best Android camera on the market. And going by the specifications of it on paper, it's pretty hard to argue with that claim. However, even if it does sport a great camera (or any other better specifications, for that matter), it will still have to go against the likes of Nexus 5 that's already a fan favorite.

So how do both of these devices stand against each other in terms of specifications? Let's take a closer look.

Operating System
First up, let's take a look at the types of operating systems we are dealing with here. While both the devices run on Google's Android operating system, it seems like the Nexus 5 easily has the upper hand here with the device offering the latest Android KitKat OS v4.4 which can later be upgraded to v4.4.2.

The Gionee-made Elife E7, on the other hand, runs on Android Jelly Bean v4.2. And although that's also somewhat a latest offering in terms of latest Android builds, but KitKat is an entirely different ball game.

Display and Dimensions
In terms of the offered Display, the Gionee Elife E7 slightly edges past the Nexus 5 by offering a 5.5-inch FHD LTPS Touchscreen Display with dimensions of 150.6x75.0x9.7 mm. However, the device is also a bit on the heavier side as it weighs 150gms (which is quite a handful).

The Nexus 5, on the other hand, sports 4.95-inch True HD IPS+ capacitive touchscreen with dimensions of 137.9 x 69.2 x 8.6 mm. And compared to the Gionee-based device, the Nexus 5 is much lighter, weighing in at 130gms.

Camera
As we mentioned earlier, it is quite difficult to compare the Elife E7's on paper camera specs with anything else that's in the market at the moment. And rightfully so since the device sports a massive 16-megapixel auto focus rear camera with 1/2.3″ 1.34 µm Largan M8 sensor, 5 element Sapphire Lens, alongside a unique and stunning 8-megapixel auto focus front-facing shooter.

The Nexus 5, however, offers an 8-megapixel primary rear shooter with 3264 x 2448 pixels featuring autofocus, optical image stabilization and LED flash. There's also a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera present.

Processing Power
As far as in-device processing power is concerned, the Gionee handset is powered by Qualcomm's most powerful 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 processor - which is quite powerful in terms of getting you day to day work done.

The Nexus 5, on the other hand, sports a quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU with Qualcomm'ds MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset.

Storage and RAM
The Gionee Elife E7 sports 3GB of RAM with 32GB internal memory. And accordingly, the manufacturer hasn't provided any extra slot for further memory expansion externally since 32GB will take some time before it gets over.

The Nexus 5, in this respect, offers 2GB of RAM with internal storage variants of both 16GB and 32GB. Again, an external card slot for further memory expansion is missing.

Price
While the Gionee Elife E7 is available in the Indian market in two variants, 32GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/2GB RAM priced at Rs 29,999 and Rs 26,999 respectively, the Nexus 5, also currently available in both 16GB and 32GB variants, will cost you Rs. 28,999 and Rs. 32,999, respectively.

Conclusion
While the Nexus 5 has that all important Google tag to it, it seems like the Gionee Elife E7 may have a slight advantage over the device in terms of most of the specs on offer from the manufacturer. And it is expected that fans will be enticed by the prospect of owning a smartphone with a 16-megapixel camera at a cheaper price than that of Nexus 5. However, time will tell as to who takes the cake in the long run.
