Micromax Canvas 5: CyanogenMod-Based Smartphone with 18MP Shooter Tipped to Arrive Later This Year
Micromax rise has been driven by a blend of elegant looking mid-end phones. The domestic vendor has proved over again that it is possible to create popular Android phones.
However, over the past few months, Micromax has not been able to come up with something unique that put them back into the limelight. Every year, we hear tons of rumors about the next-generation big-ticket handset in the Canvas series.

In the beginning of the year, rumors focused in on the Canvas Gold, followed by the Canvas Nitro. Well if rumors have anything to go by, the company might plan to launch the Canvas 5 in India in the coming months.
If a recent anonymously sourced report is to be believed, Micromax will be the first smartphone in the firm's lineup to run on CyanogenMod OS, and will be launched later this year below the Rs 22,000 price point.
While images or specifications aren't available at this time, it appears that the speculated handset might come with a 5-inch full HD display. The device would be powered by a MediaTek octa-core processor, coupled with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of native storage and a microSD card slot. The Canvas 5 is expected to get an 18-megapixel rear-facing camera, alongside a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter.
Finally, take a note. It's looking like the Micromax Canvas 5 is going to be run on CyanogenMod (based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat). Just last week an anonymous report claimed that Cyanogen might have inked a deal with Micromax. Since then the streets apparently have been constantly buzzed with speculations that Micromax could release a CyanogenMod-powered handset as early as later this year.
At this point though, it would be wise to take this rumor as a pinch of salt. Of course, Micromax could opt for a CyanogenMod-based handset to intensify competition, but as of right now, consumers should assume that we'll see the Canvas 5 sooner than expected.
