By Anuj

Research firm Gfk has released a new market analysis report on the smartphone market in India. The data shows Microsoft is winning heavily against the likes of Apple and other global handset makers.

Microsoft Mobile is now the third largest smartphone maker in India with an estimated market share of 12 %. While Samsung is the top handset maker with 33 % market share, followed by Micromax with 18 % market share.

"Gfk data for July, August and September showed South Korea's Samsung had achieved a 33% market share at the end of the period after gaining over a percentage point from August. Home-bred Micromax came in second with more than 18% share, adding a tad over the previous month while Finnish handset maker Nokia, now owned by Microsoft, managed to keep itself going at No. 3 with 12% share", notes The Times of India.

Due to the growth in the low-end devices, Microsoft seemed to have performed better than previous quarters. This year it has already shipped handsets like Lumia 530 and Lumia 630, both devices are priced under Rs. 10,000 price mark.

Microsoft recently released its earnings report for the first quarter of the fiscal 2015. The Redmond-based giant sold a record 9.3 million Lumia smartphones. The number is a drastic increase over the 5.8 million units sold in the previous quarter, and more than the 8.8 million devices from the same period last year.

During the festive season this year, the company launched the much-hyped, Lumia 930, alongside the Lumia 830 and Lumia 730 in India. All three smartphones are powered by Windows Phone 8.1 mobile operating system.
