Nokia Lumia 1520: OS, Apps and Performance

Nokia always had the habit of offering more and extra stuff in its phones since quite a long time ago. And if you can look past the fact that the device runs on the Windows Phone platform, it's an impressive device filled with a lot of features and apps for all uses.

The OS itself, Windows Phone 8, is not really that bad an operating system, although it can be a bit erratic at times and can really get to your nerves. Although you will definitely come to like its Live Tiles system, other such features inside the phone might not arrive to your liking.

The OS may be strong, but the device still has issues with offering easy access to services such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as a notification panel or toggle for the same is still missing in action.

There's also the presence of Nokia Music which is kind of a decent offering and offers somewhat standard music service. The biggest advantage of the app is that it has the ability to download up to four user-defined playlists for offline listening. It actually replaces the Xbox Music app, although there's still the option to download it if you want the Microsoft-based service.

There's also the more than improved HERE Maps for standard day-to-day mapping needs, HERE Drive for satellite navigation and HERE Transit for public transport. Of all the three, the Drive is clearly the most impressive one. And unlike the Android and iOS versions, it lets you download maps for offline use, making it a great navigation option.

Getting into the device's performance, the device is greatly helped by the fact its powered by a quad-core, 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB RAM - making it smoother and faster to work with the OS, while also running apps effortlessly.

Nokia Lumia 1520: Camera

If a comparison is to be drawn with respect to the device's camera, it can be said that the although the camera for the Lumia 1520 is great, the camera for the Lumia 1020 was even better. The 1520 comes with a 20MP PureView sensor compared to the 1020's 41MP snapper. Also, it has a smaller f/2.4 aperture, and has a dual-LED flash rather than the Xenon and LED offering with the 1020.

However, it seems like the Lumia 1520's camera offers to make up for that with a great optical image stabilization - required immensely for both photos and videos.

The 1520 also comes with a host of photography apps with the two most important and impressive apps being the Nokia Pro Cam and Nokia Refocus. While Refocus (an entirely separate app) lets you manipulate the focus and color of photos before sharing, the Pro Cam gives you full control over all the different kinds of things you'll find in really dedicated cameras, such as white balance, exposure, ISO and more.
