While Panasonic is looking to enter the market after a big gap with a device that could actually be one of the best smartphones in the given range and bring over some popualrity for the company, the M2 is already there with Sony already testing the market with the device.

The Panasonic P81, on the other hand, comes with a greater 5-inch capacitive touchscreen with the same 720 x 1280 pixels resolution.

The Sony Xperia M2, in the camera department, offers an 8-megapixel primary camera, sporting a pixel resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels, with autofocus and LED flash. The device also comes with a front-facing snapper.

The P81, on the other hand, offers a greater 13-megapixel camera at the back with flash, with a similar 2-megapixel camera up front.

Panasonic may not a certain "brand name" attached to it and that might also be the ultimate demise of the P81, but if taken both the devices with an open mind, the Panasonic P81, which is at least 1k less than the Xperia M2, will easily turn out to be the best.

Sony might have the upper hand here since the Xperia range of devices have made such a name for themselves. But from an entirely neutral point of view, the P81 is a better buy.
