While Samsung has been rumored heavily regarding its next flagship smartphone - Galaxy S4, the tech enthusiasts were surprised with the first images of Galaxy Grand, an affordable 5 inch device, which was initially spotted at the FCC with advanced specifications. It is to be noted that Galaxy Grand is reminiscent to the hottest selling smartphone of 2012 - Galaxy S3.

Galaxy Grand with the codename Baffin was speculated to be launched by the end of this year and silently, the South Korean tech giant has unwrapped the big screen device without much fanfare. Interestingly, the new Galaxy Grand smartphone will come in two versions - single SIM and Dual SIM versions.

As Galaxy Grand is designed on the lines of Galaxy S3, the device will have all the exclusive S features including Direct Call, Smart Alert, Popup Video, Multi-Windows & S Voice, which are present in Galaxy Note 2 as well.

Display: Galaxy Grand packs a 5 inch multi-touch LCD capacitive touchscreen display with a very low resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.

Processor: The handset comes equipped with a dual core 1.2GHz processor under its hood.

OS: In this segment, Galaxy Grand is based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS as rumored earlier.

Camera: When it comes to camera optics, the device sports an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera for video calling.

Storage: Speaking of storage, the handset has 8GB internal storage capacity, 1GB RAM and a micro SD card slot supporting up to 64GB additional storage.

Connectivity: In terms of connectivity, Galaxy Grand is packed with features including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, HDMI, A-GPS and DLNA.

Battery: The handset is loaded with a 2,100 mAh Li-ion battery, which will offer decent backup.

Price & Availability

As of now, Samsung has not disclosed any details regarding the price and availability of the device, however, analysts have already predicted that it could be priced between 800,000 won (approx. Rs 41,000) and 100,000 won (approx. Rs 51,000).

Moreover, considering the release strategy of Samsung, this handset could be released in the global markets within a month or two.

HTC One SV Competitor

Analyzing the specifications, Galaxy Grand seems to be a competitor of the recently launched HTC One SV, the LTE variant of Desire SV.

When it comes to specs, One SV comes with a 4.3 inch Super LCD 2 capacitive touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution, 1.2GHz dual core S4 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB onboard storage, which can be expanded to 32GB via micro SD card slot, Android 4.0 ICS, 5MP rear camera, 1.6MP front camera, NFC, 4G LTE, 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 1,080 mAh battery.

As claimed by the company, One SV will support integration to cloud storage services including SkyDrive and Dropbox. Further, similar to the other HTC smartphones, One SV also comes with Beats Audio integration and some advanced features such as VideoPic and BSI sensors for better low light photography.

With an increased display size, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean user experience, better battery backup and improved front and rear camera performance, Galaxy Grand could be a better option, but, the latter comes with free cloud storage facility, the latter could be the right choice.

As claimed by the company, "For the dual SIM version, its innovative dual SIM feature provides total communication flexibility, allowing users to manage two phone numbers from a single phone. It is possible to receive calls on one SIM number while taking a call from the other, ensuring efficient management of personal and work commitments without ever missing a call. Dual SIM also offers the flexibility of selecting different billing plans for either SIM, switching between them to make the most of cheaper call and data plans."
