Samsung Reportedly Going to Showcase 5.5-Inch Flexible Display at CES 2013
CES 2013 has a lot of surprises in store for the techie. Adding to them are the flexible displays from Samsung which the company will show off during the event.
One of the displays is a 5.5 inch smartphone display while the other is a 55 inch one. Samsung flexible displays have been in the news of late. Last March, the company had announced its plans for the mass production of these innovative displays for the company's devices.
Samsung, while announcing its decision to mass produce such flexible displays for the company's products, had given the tentative dates around late 2012 or else early 2013 for the launch of such devices. The scheduled demonstration of the flexible displays at CES in 2013 coincides very well with this announcement.
The 5.5 inch smartphone display has a 267 ppi (1280 x 720) HD resolution. The TV-sized display measures 55 inches and the details of its resolution are unknown as of now. The displays are quite flexible and bendy, but cannot be rolled up at this point of time. Samsung aims to eventually create flexible displays that can be rolled up.
A number of patents from Samsung surfaced back in March which revealed the company's plans for flexible displays. One of these patents was for a horizontal flexible display that can be rolled up. The display can be pulled open just like a film roll. Perhaps, this type of display is intended for small devices to provide them with large screens. Another patent showed a flexible display which can be folded just like a book. These displays may be intended for e-readers.
