Sony seems to be concentrating on India largely in order to increase its smartphone market share. While it has been only a month since the release of Xperia Z and Xperia ZL in India, the firm has announced the launch of Xperia SP, the newly unveiled smartphone and the younger kin of Xperia Z.
Sony has officially announced that Xperia SP will be priced at Rs 27,490 and will be available from mid-April, which is only a few weeks away. The handset was unveiled on March 18 at a special media event in Russia alongside Xperia L.
It is to be noted that Xperia SP is a better offering as compared to Xperia L comparing on the basis of specifications. On the other hand, when compared to high end Xperia Z which is priced in India at Rs 37,990, Xperia SP may be downsized but it can be claimed as a decent alternative to the waterproof, dustproof heavyweight.
Specwise, Xperia SP packs a 4.6 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 technology, 1.7GHz dual core Snapdragon S4 processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, 8MP rear camera with autofocus and Exmor RS technology, VGA front camera for video calling, 8GB internal storage, micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS, NFC and a 2,370 mAh battery.

On the software side, as Xperia Z, Xperia SP both come with common software features including NFC connectivity for One-touch function, Battery Stamina Mode for extended battery life and Sony's signature media apps including Walkman, Music and Movies for enjoying photos, music, movies and games on the go.
Hence, it can be said that on the software front both Xperia SP is quite similar to the flagship smartphone Xperia Z. The only difference lies in the size and some specs, as the mid range smartphone comes with a smaller display, lesser pixel density, dual core processor, lesser camera resolution and downsized battery. At the same time, Xperia SP is not waterproof and dust resistant as the Xperia Z.
When it comes to pricing, Xperia SP priced at Rs 27,490 and could be a better offering for those who cannot afford to spend too much on Xperia Z purchase.
