Sony Xperia U Hands-on Review

Unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2012, Sony Xperia U is the third handset in the Sony"s lineup of Android based Xperia smartphones. With a price tag of Rs 14,999 the handset completely falls within the budget territory of the Indian market, therefore many consumers might be interested to buy the stunning smartphone this Diwali season. But before going for the final purchase, do read the Gizbot review if you have any doubts in mind about the latest Xperia smartphone.

Form Factor

Build-wise, Sony Xperia U is an attractive phone, which gives a feel of a high-end sophisticated cum geeky device in the first look. Over 90% of the Xperia U front is display and the back is curved slightly for comfort like on Xperia S and on Xperia P. It has transparent strip with an illuminated light bar at the bottom, which illuminates when viewing pictures or music by picking up the dominant colour in the picture.

Further, the handset has exchangeable bottom caps below the illuminated strip. The interchangeable bottom cap comes in 4 colours: Pink, Black, White and Yellow. Gizbot received the white variant with the yellow interchangeable end cap.

Lookwise, Xperia U has a matte plastic feel, which is nice to touch and feel and it offers a decent grip to the handset, thereby, preventing it from falling.

The capacitive touchscreen display of the handset measures 3.5 inches with a resolution of 854 x 480 and at 280 ppi, and the smartphone has all the capabilities to compete with the HTC and Samsung for the highest pixel density in any mobile phone released around the price tag.

Xperia U also supports multi-touch up to 4 fingers and features High Definition Reality Display with mobile BRAVIA engine from Sony and is capable of displaying 16,777,216 colours.

Undoubtedly, the handset boasts a beautiful display, however, there is one issue which is ill-fitting and that is the screen panel -- it is narrower which can give a cramped feeling when watching videos, taking pictures or playing games. For some, even typing can be fiddly and might give an impression of a petite handset as there is not enough space to properly enjoy browsing full desktop versions of websites or even some of the mobile sites.

Another point to note is that you will need a screen guard instantly, as the display glass of the handset automatically bends to touch the surface, producing an oily sheen and discoloured patches of pixels.

Besides that, Xperia U is cool handset and is lightweight at 110 grams boasting a hunky-dory dimension of 112 x 54 x 12 mm.
