Sony Xperia U: The smallest Xperia model review

Sony delivered a new level of smartphone experience with a series of Xperia phones last year. The company has launched the Xperia U, Xperia S and Xperia P smartphones to its successful range. Even though Sony Xperia U is the cheapest and smallest of the new three models, it has not compromised on its specs.

It comes in a smaller chassis compared to other models and has a soft touch feel on the back side and resists smudges and fingerprints. It features 3.5-inch screen with 854×480 resolution. The processing part is managed by dual-core NovaThor U8500 processor with 1 GHz speed. For a smaller model, this kind of processing speed is really good. It is supported with 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM. You can come across good graphic features too powered with Mali-400MP graphical unit.

The multimedia facilities of this Sony smartphone include 5megapixel rear camera with 720p video recording speed too. You can take perfect still images in different lighting scenario. However it lacks in video capturing. The noise reduction is not that efficient in video modes. Web browsing is pretty good with smooth transitions possible with double tapping.

The external storage feature is not that impressive as it doesn"t feature microSD card slot support and the USB connectivity too not optimized design wise for ease of use. The USB port is seen on the left side of the phone. The right side houses volume rocker, power, and also a dedicated camera key. The top portion houses microphone and 3.5mm headphone jack. Mic is placed at the bottom. They could have done better on the placement of these options with mixed reviews coming in from the users.

However there is some flexibility provided for you change the bottom cap with your favourite colour cover. The antenna strip colour can also be changed with the Android settings. As with the other models, Sony Xperia U now runs on Gingerbread operating system and the company promises an ICS update in the near future. This update will surely enhance the facilities offered by this smartphone with the current Gingerbread operating system.

The device offers certain bundled software like McAfee, OfficeSuite and also WisePilot and apps like Astro File Manager and WhatsApp for better user convenience. They also provide access to Sony"s own apps like Track ID, Media Remote, Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited, and Play Now. These utility apps certainly enhance its value as a user friendly phone.

Sony Xperia U is powered by 1,290mAh battery which offers a full operating time of 4 hours and 37 minutes. It lasts for a full day for light users. The device measures 112 x 54 x 12 mm and weighs 110 g.

Sony Xperia U can be purchased at a price of around Rs. 16,000/-. With all these decent specifications, this Sony smartphone is a device worth buying.
