As the Consumer Electronics Show 2013 commences in Las Vegas, several tech companies have started announcing their next generation devices at the tech show, burning the set stage with a plethora of launches.

 

Sony has launched one of its biggest offerings of the year - Xperia Z handset with 1080p display. This would be the current flagship smartphone of Sony.

 

Moreover, according to the company press release, the handset will come preloaded with several software features including One-touch functions, Bravia Engine 2 display, Walkman, Album, Media, Battery Stamina mode and omnibalance design.

With the launch of the handset, tech experts have started predicting that it will be definitely be a rival to several best selling smartphones including Apple iPhone 5.

Speaking of iPhone 5, the handset misses out some of the most desirable features including NFC, wireless charging and the most sought after - Retina Display.

When it comes to the Indian availability, Xperia Z is claimed to be launched globally in Q1 2013, while iPhone 5 is available at Rs 45,500, Rs 52,500 and Rs 59,500 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants respectively.

Dimensions & Weight: Being a 5 inch handset, Xperia Z measures 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm in dimension and weighs in at 140 grams. In comparison, iPhone 5 carries a dimension of 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and weighs in at 112 grams.

Display: When it comes to display, Xperia Z sports a 5 inch full HD capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, whereas, iPhone 5 packs a 4 inch LED-backlit IPS capacitive touchscreen Retina display with 1136 x 640 pixel resolution.

Processor: In this segment, Xperia Z comes with a quad core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. On the other hand, iPhone 5 is equipped with a new Apple A6 chipset.

Operating System: When it comes to OS, Xperia Z runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and iPhone 5 is running on iOS 6.

Speaking about the new features of the operating systems, iOS 6, the latest version of the Apple's mobile OS is loaded with 200 new features including Apple Maps, improved Siri, new Safari browser, iCloud cloud storage, deeper integration to Facebook, new PassBook app, PhotoStream app and more.

On the other hand, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has new features including Project Butter, expandable and contractible notifications, resizable app widgets, live wallpaper preview, high resolution contact photos, improved Android Beam and many more.

Camera: On the camera optics front, Xperia Z comes with 13MP rear camera and a 2.2MP front camera for video calling. The camera are equipped with Exmor RS and HDR technology, which adds capabilities like digital cameras.

In comparison, iPhone 5 comes with an 8MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash features and a 1.3MP front camera for video calling. Further, iPhone 5 has a iSight camera which includes features like backside illumination, HDR, panorama support and faster aperture speed.

Storage: When it comes to storage, Xperia Z has 16GB internal storage, 2GB RAM and a micro SD card slot for 32GB expandable storage. On the other hand, iPhone 5 comes in three variants - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants and 1GB RAM. However, iPhone 5 lacks a micro SD card slot for additional memory support.

Connectivity: When it comes to data connectivity, Xperia Z and iPhone 5 have features including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, 4G LTE and micro USB 2.0. Further, Xperia Z comes with NFC, which makes mobile payments easier.

Battery: Xperia Z is loaded with a 2,330 mAh battery with battery stamina mode feature, whereas, iPhone 5 is claimed to have a Li-ion battery delivering 225 hours standby and 8 hours talk time.

Price: While there is no word on the price of Xperia Z, iPhone 5 is available at Rs 45,500, Rs 52,500 and Rs 59,500 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants.

Verdict

Both Xperia Z and iPhone 5 are high-end smartphones with advanced specifications and features. Moreover, they are based on rival operating systems - Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and iOS 6 and hence, they are packed with unique software features that are exclusive to their platforms.

If the concern is on a full HD 1080p display, better camera performance, NFC connectivity, expandable memory option and a plethora of software features, Xperia Z could be the right choice.

On the other hand, if the concern is on the size and usability of the handset and increased internal storage options, iPhone 5 should be a better option.

At the end, the buying decision depends on the consumers based on the operating system and price.
