LG Optimus G vs Sony Xperia Z: Quad Core Flagship Smartphones Wrestle on Indian Lands

Last week, LG released its flagship smartphone - Optimus G in India at a price tag of Rs 34,500, declaring a standing rivalry with other flagship models launched recently including BlackBerry Z10. This week, one more behemoth is going to bedazzle the tech ground of the nation, which is none other than Sony's dust and water proof shiny 1080p smartphone, showcased at CES 2013 - Xperia Z. The Japanese tech giant has informed the tech world that Xperia Z will be launched in India on March 6 at a media event in New Delhi.

Above all, Gizbot has exclusively learned that Xperia Z will be available for pre-order online from the very same day of its launch in the price range of Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000 and it will be available on retail stores from the following week.

Form Factor: Optimus G measuring 131.9 x 68.9 x 8.5 mm and 146 grams is slightly thicker than Xperia Z boasting a dimension of 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm and weight of around 146 grams.

Optimus G packs a 4.7 inch True HD IPS+ LCD multi-touch capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 768 pixel resolution, 318 ppi pixel density and Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top of Optimus v3.0 UI.

On the other hand, Xperia Z houses a 5 inch 10 point multi-touch capacitive touchscreen display with Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 441 ppi pixel density, a shatter proof and scratch resistant protection and Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2.

Considering the display sizes, Xperia Z seems to be lightweight as compared to Optimus G and also it boasts a magnificent display packed with more pixel density as compared to its opponent. At the same time, the Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 offers excellent viewing experience with superior quality and brightness.

Further, Xperia Z comes with a IP57 certification making it dust and water resistant, which is an interesting aspect.

Processor: In this semgent, both the smartphones come equipped with a Qualcomm MDM9215M / APQ8064 chipset using a 1.5GHz Krait processor and Adreno 320 GPU. This chip increases the power management and multimedia performance of the devices effectively and also offers faster graphic processing capabilities.

Operating System: Optimus G was initially launched with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, but it has received the official Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean upgrade. At the same time, Xperia Z, which runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS can be upgradeable to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS.

Camera: Again, both the handsets come with a 13MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and 1080p video recording. However, the camera in Xperia Z comes with HDR and sweep panorama features.

When it comes to front camera, Xperia Z has a better 2.2MP front camera with 1080p video recording ability as compared to the 1.3MP front camera in Optimus G.

Storage: On the storage front, Optimus G has 32GB internal storage and 2GB RAM and lacks a micro SD card slot for expandable memory support.

In comparison, Xperia Z has 16GB internal storage, 2GB RAM and comes with a micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB additional storage.

Connectivity: In terms of internet connectivity, Xperia Z seems to be faster with high-speed GPRS/EDGE and HSDPA and HSUPA with up to 100Mbps download speeds.

Besides this, both Optimus G and Xperia Z come with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and micro USB 2.0 support.

Battery: Optimus G comes with a non-detachable 2,100 mAh Li-Po battery delivering up to 15 hours of talk time and 335 hours standby. In comparison, Xperia Z comes with a non-removable 2,330 mAh Li-Ion battery with a 550 hours standby and 11 hours talk time.

Software Features: Based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, both Optimus G and Xperia Z come with features including Project Butter for smoother and responsive performance, on-screen buttons for navigation, improved expandable and contractible Android notifications, resizable App Widgets functionality, Android Beam, Google Now and more.

Apart from these, Optimus G comes with QSlide, QuickMemo, Live Zooming, TimeCatch Shot and Dual Screen Dual Play features. At the same time, Xperia Z has features such as Exmor RS and HDR camera technologies, Battery Stamina Mode and a plethora of media applications including Walkman, Album and Movies.

Price: Optimus G has been released officially with a price tag of Rs 34,500. At the same time, Xperia Z is available on pre-order at Rs 40,000 online.

Verdict

Both Optimus G and Xperia Z come with high-end features and specifications being flagship handsets of tech titans. Also, these handsets come loaded with a plethora of software features that make them excellent offerings in the current smartphone arena.

Optimus G might be a good choice for those who like to have a relatively less priced handset and not too concerned on the camera and battery performance.

On the other hand, Xperia Z being a lightweight smartphone with better camera performance, enhanced battery backup and a full HD display.
