Support Phonebloks: A Phone That You Can Upgrade One Piece At A Time

|

Every month, mobile phone manufacturers flood the market with dozens of handsets with newer and more powerful components and features. The average person changes his mobile device once a year so that he will have access to the latest and greatest hardware. Even though this entire cycle seems obnoxious and excessive, you and I are going to keep changing our phones over and over because we need the latest processor, the best camera and that new, improved battery pack. Now think about all the plastic waste and the excessive spending that goes into this cycle. So what's the solution? Phoneblocs.

The solution

Dutch designer Dave Hakkens' Phonebloks concept, if applied, could change the way phones are made forever. So how does it work? Simple. Each device has a motherboard dilled with holes. The holes in the motherboard contain electrical connectors, which form a circuit with the conductive pins of the blocks, thereby leaving you with a fully-upgradeable device. Now every component of the phone, ie, the CPU, display, camera, speaker, etc, is a simple block that can be fitted into the drilled holes.

Potential

Yes, swapping older components for newer, more improved versions is one of the biggest advantages of the concept. However, it also offers tremendous flexibility to users. So let's say I'm a business person on the move and do not require an audio jack and a gyroscope, I could swap those two parts out for a larger battery and more processing power. If imaging is my priority, I could swap other parts for a much larger and more improved camera.

After you've put in all the required parts, you have to just screw in a holding plate to ensure that your device is firm, solid and sturdy.

Potential to change the phone industry

As wonderful as all this sounds, the concept will be extremely hard to realize since it has the potential to change the mobile business forever. Instead of enjoying fat margins on entire handsets, manufacturers will have to scramble and compete for tiny profits on components and blocks, thereby making their efforts less fruitful.

At the moment, things are at a very nascent stage and the project is trying to raise researchers and investors by using Thunderclap, a social-media platform. Interested in lending a hand? Visit their page and help them here.
