Windows Phone 7.8: Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 And 900 Owners To Get Update In Coming Weeks

It was only in the second week of January, Gizbot exclusively interview Viral Oza, Marketing Director, Nokia India on the sidelines of Lumia smartphones launch and tipped that all the Lumia smartphones running on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system including Lumia 610, Lumia 710, Lumia 800, Lumia 900 and the newly launched Lumia 510 will be receiving the Windows Phone 7.8 Refresh upgrade in the next two weeks including the handsets present in the Indian market.

Well, the news has come out to be true, Microsoft has started dispensing the Windows Phone 7.8 update from 1800 hrs GMT on January 30, starting with Lumia 900. The Windows Phone 7.8 update is beginning its rollout to phones currently running on Windows Phone 7.5, and will be moving on to worldwide in the coming weeks of February.

Nokia has confirmed the report on its official blog post that " following extensive software testing, update notifications will begin to appear for Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900 owners with an unlocked phone or operator approved software during February."

New Features

The new improvement from 7.5 to 7.8 will include a new Start screen look and feel, familiar to that in Windows Phone 8, Ringtone maker app to selected markets to create a personal ringtone, Contact share app updated to support sharing over Bluetooth in addition to SMS and email and more. Few other additional apps like Camera features, Nokia City lens etc. which are used to increase the functionality of camera in the device.

The upgrade to WP 7.8 will also bring in Bing's wallpaper feature. The wallpaper feature was earlier available only to desktop users and this changes the background image automatically on a daily basis.

There is however, little news about other enhancements such as additional language support. The users can ensure not to miss the update by enabling notifications under "Settings", "Phone Update". This ensures that the user is notified when the phone receives an update. The Finnish giant, advices the users, to contact their respective carriers, in case, they do not receive the update within a period of three weeks.
