A device which can copy streamed audio from SLUG

You might have come across a situation where you urgently need an audio or sound track for some purpose. You browse around the net and finally come across the needed file. Then only you may know that the file is for hearing purpose only and you cannot download it. So the only option that you have is to play the file and record it using a microphone. If you are using a normal computer microphone then the track would not even be worth the time you spend doing it. Even if you can get a high sensitivity microphone and manages to record, the sound quality won’t be appreciable.

SLUG, which is a small gadget which can record sound tracks being played in the computer without any loss is your answer to all the above mentioned problems. The device is made by Kennethg Gibbs and Seena Zandipour who clearly understands the hassles of recording sound from streaming content. The founders claim that the little gadget can obtain streamed sound files from a computer or some other electronic device. This would surely cause a stir in the music world.

The device is very simple and small. It is so small that it can easily fit in your palm. The first thing that you will notice is the two 3.5 mm jacks that protrude from the gadget. It may initially look like a mobile phone adapter without the chords. The whole black device has certain circular graphics with red and gold colours on its sides.

To record music what you simply have to do is to plug the device in to you computer or laptop or any other electronic device from which you intend to copy the music. One of the 3.5 mm jacks go into the headphone port and the other jack goes into the microphone port. The spacing between these two ports may not be same in all the devices so an adapter is provided which is adjustable and can fit any irregularly spaced ports. The sound output is taken from the headphone port and it is redirected to the microphone port. The input into the microphone port can be saved by the user as Mp3 files in their system.

The device also features some additional features to aid the recording. It includes an option which detects breaks or pauses in songs. This comes in very handy when you are recording a complete play list. So you can set the device to stream and download a huge play list and leave it overnight. Each time a track ends, the device detects the time interval of the pause and records the next track as a separate one. So there is no worry that the complete play list will be recorded in a single file.

If you have ten files in the play list then the device will record it as ten different Mp3 tracks. One other feature is that the user can set the devices to delete files under a certain length. This helps to avoid saving commercials which usually comes in between two tracks.

SLUG is extremely versatile and even lets you record sound from an external electronic device. There is a 3.5 mm audio jack in a short cable which can be connected to the headphone port of any other device and can be used to record audio. The users can even monitor the audio being recorded via dedicated ear phone ports on the device. SLUG is expected to have a price tag of about Rs.1,500/- in India.
