India the top source of spam in 2011
Over 50% of the total spam messages across the world during the third quarter of the year 2011 was originated from about six countries of which India accounts for the highest with 14.8% on the whole. The spam report of Kaspersky Lab states that India is ahead of the countries like Indonesia, Brazil, Peru, South Korea and Ukraine with 10.6%, 9.65%, 6.65%, 5.85% and 3.7% respectively.
The countries that contributed to the spam are mainly located in the regions like Eastern Europe, Asia and South America. This is mainly because of the numerous users in those countries and they are not too exposed to the IT security. These reasons make them soft targets for the cyber criminals who spread spam bots.
The report also claims that all the the GCC countries have accounted to 1.33% of the total global spam in which Saudi Arabia is leading. This was due to the low user count and the high vigilance in protecting the systems in these countries. The GCC countries are United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.
