According to a report by Cyber Media Research (CMR), India’s tablet PC market has registered sales of 0.5 million units in the April-June 2012 quarter. 71,788 units were sold in the same period last year. The tablet PC market in India is still at a developing stage. However the entry of new vendors has made the tablet market scene highly competitive. Recently several new vendors had arrived with entry-level offerings. As per current statistics, around 90 vendors have launched tablets till the second quarter of 2012.The average selling value (ASV) which stood at Rs.26,000 in January-March period has dropped to Rs.13,000 in April-June 2012.This is attributed to the arrival of new tablets in the price range of Rs.5,000-Rs.10,000.
During the second quarter of 2012, 47.4% of the total sales were made by new models which focused on education and entertainment segments. This clearly showcases the fact that the tablet makers are targeting youth with their devices. According to the report from CMR, Android OS has the strongest presence in the tablet market at 87.5%.
According to CMR Lead Analyst(Telecom Practice),Faisal Kawoosa, “As Android devices become increasingly popular with users across the world, competition is increasing in the India tablets market with more and more vendors launching devices based on the Android OS,"
Popularity of devices based on iOS, Windows and QNX are expected to rise in future. Windows OS will particularly see a boost as Microsoft Windows Surface Tablet has been announced. The tablet is expected to make considerable sales upon its launch. Apple iPad 3 will contribute to growth of iOS operating system in the tablet market segment and the reduction in prices of BlackBerry Playbook is expected to promote the popularity of QNX.
