Windows 8: Microsoft Sued by SurfCast Over Use of Live Tiles
A US based marine company named SurfCast has sued Microsoft for patenting the Windows 8 ‘Live Tiles’ concept which dates back to the 90’s. The new lawsuit against Microsoft is expected to come as a major blow for the company. The new operating system was launched on October 26. ‘Live Tiles’ was one of the most important attractions during the launch of the operating system for its users.
The new lawsuit being filed by SurfCast claims that Microsoft has knowingly infringed the patent of SurfCast in a range of Windows 8 products and violated patent laws by selling the operating system. SurfCast further claimed that Microsoft had the knowledge of the 403 patent from as early as April 21, 2009 and still went ahead by naming one of the most important features after the patented technology.
If the court order goes against Microsoft, then the verdict could be either for compensation in the form of money or removal and modification of the existing Windows 8 system. The first verdict will not be a problem for the PC Giant where as the other verdict of removal or modifications can seriously hamper the popularity and reputation of the Windows 8 operating system. It remains to be seen how the verdict will affect Microsoft if the allegations of patent infringement is true.
