When the Apple iPad Air was announced last year, people were swayed by the tablet's ridiculously light design and an affordable price tag attached to it. No tablet other than the iPad got overwhelming response across the word.
Four years since Apple introduced the iPad, the tablet market has now started giving negative signals. Apple sold 16.35 million iPads during the last quarter, representing about a 16% decline in sales from the same quarter a year-ago. Despite decline in iPad sales, Apple remained the market leader in the combined PC and tablet market in Q1 this year.
In response to declining iPad sales, Apple might come up with an extra large tablet later this year. Dubbed the iPad Pro, the mysterious tablet is expected to have a 12.9-inch display, making it significantly larger than the current 9.7-inch iPad Air.
A metallic rear back of what appears to the upcoming "iPad Pro" has been posted on the Chinese forum site Weibo. Believe it or not, the part looks to be for an upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Pro, though the exact size of the product is yet to be verified.
Aside with a huge size, the tablet has an Apple logo and a rear camera round cutout. Rumor has it that the aluminum back is said to be reference for creating cases and other accessories, MacRumors notes. It seems that the iPad Pro would be similar to that of Apple's existing 13.3-inch MacBook Air.
Like all rumors you should take this with a pinch of salt. Nothing is confirmed yet. For now, let's take a look at the five most interesting and persistent rumors surrounding Apple's upcoming iPad Pro.
Back in the early 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was testing displays for a larger 12.9-inch iPad.
"In recent months, Apple has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches and has also asked for screen designs for a new tablet device measuring slightly less than 13 inches diagonally, they said. The current iPhone 5 has a four-inch screen, while the iPad has a 9.7-inch screen. The iPad Mini, a stripped-down version of its tablet computer, has a 7.9-inch screen."
In January 2014, DigiTimes indicated that Apple might come up with a 12.9-inch iPad by the end of third quarter. No more details about the device were shared back then.
"Market sources indicated that Apple is likely to release a 12.9-inch model by the end of the third quarter at the earliest."
Not long ago, KGI securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo, has pointed towards a likely 2015 launch date for the iPad Pro.
Back in March 2014, DigiTimes reported that Apple had apparently shelved its 12.9-inch iPad Maxi in favor of other projects.
In December 2013, a report from International Business Times indicated that Apple will launch the iPad Pro in two variants- one with a Quad HD display (2K), and the other with a 4K display. Meanwhile, the first version with a quad HD (2K) display will reportedly debut in April next year, while an ultra HD (4K) version slated to launch in October.
