Last week, Apple finally confirmed that new iPads would be hitting markets later this month. While the Cupertino-based giant had spent a considerable amount of time explaining key new features of the iPad Air 2. Unfortunately the iPad Mini 3 was given negligible footage at the launch event.
The latest version of iPad is identical to its predecessor except the iPad Mini 3 now has a fingerprint sensor and will be available in Gold variant. Baring these two features, nothing much has changed. The iPad Mini 3 offers the chipset, Retina display and camera as the iPad Mini 2. Notably, the iPad Mini 3 will be able to make use of Apple's Pay, the company's latest attempt to revolutionize mobile payment solutions.
A tablet like the iPad Mini is now seen as less tempting compared to phablet or 2-in-1 laptops. Just a day back, Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the third straight quarter of declining iPad sales during the company's earnings call. Apple sold 12.3 million iPads during the September quarter, which is down 13% from a year ago. During the company's earning call, Cook said he recognized falling sales but wanted to reverse the trend. It seems that Apple clearly lacks concrete plan to revive the iPad back into the limelight.
Meanwhile, we compare the iPad Mini 3 and iPad Mini 2 in order to determine which one of them has a better value for money.
If you have any questions about the two tablets you think we haven't covered then let us know in the comments below.
Apple iPad Mini 3 Vs iPad Mini 2: Design
Both the iPad Mini 3 and the iPad Mini 2 looks identical. In fact nothing has changed as far as their design is concerned. Cosmetically, though, the iPad Mini 3 seem more premium. That's because the new tablet will be made available in Gold. It is still 7.5 mm thick and 331 g with a 7.9-inch IPS Retina display (2048 x 1536) display.
Apple iPad Mini 3 Vs iPad Mini 2: Display
Apple hasn't changed the iPad Mini 3 display. The firm kept the same 7.9-inch IPS 2048 X 1536 pixel (Retina Display). Well the iPad Mini 3 display still so far the best in the crowd, though we'd have expected increase in screen resolution.
Apple iPad Mini 3 Vs iPad Mini 2: Processor
The iPad Mini 3 still has the A7 processor and M7 co-processor as the iPad Mini 2. This is extremely disappointing. The new iPad Mini 3 comes with same dated processor as used in the iPad Air and iPhone 5S. This doesn't indicate that the iPad Mini 3 will be slow, but it does mean a lot when someone asks you to shell Rs. 28,900.
Apple iPad Mini 3 Vs iPad Mini 2: TouchID
The only advantage attached with the iPad Mini 3 is that now it comes with a fingerprint scanner. More importantly, the Touch ID scanner will be required you to use Apple Pay feature. As of now, Apple has not yet announced any partnership with Indian banks to enable Apple Pay. So it doesn't really matter even if you pick up the iPad Mini 2 over the iPad Mini 3.
Apple iPad Mini 3 Vs iPad Mini 2: Camera, Battery and Connectivity
While the iPad Air 2 has a thinner and lighter design, new A8X processor, a better 8Mp iSight camera, the same cannot said about the iPad Mini 3. Like its predecessor, the new model still has a 5MP rear-facing camera and regular FaceTime HD camera.
With the iPad Mini 3, Apple promises up to 10 hours of battery on a single charge. That should be called as an improvement.
Connectivity on the new tablet remains same as the iPad Mini 2. You get to see dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and Lightning connector, among others.
Apple iPad Mini 3 Vs iPad Mini 2: Price and Verdict
Following its pricing approach over the last few years, Apple has cut down the price of the iPad Mini Retina. The tablet, which has a 7.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2,048 x1, 536 pixel resolution, now starts at Rs 21,900 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, down from Rs 28,900.
The iPad Mini 3, on the other hand, starts at Rs 28,900, Rs 35,900 and Rs 42,900 for the 16, 64 and 128GB models. iPad mini 3 with Wi-Fi + Cellular versions have been priced at Rs 38,900, Rs 45,900 and Rs 52,900, respectively.
The original iPad Mini, meanwhile, is now officially priced Rs. 17,000, making it the most affordable Apple-branded tablet ever in India. Ecommerce sites in India have been retailing the mini version of iPad at Rs. 16,000 for quite some time.
As of now, Apple hasn't announced the retail availability of the latest iPad Mini 3 for Indian users, although you can now buy the iPad Mini 2 and the iPad Mini at reduced prices. If you're considering buying the iPad Mini 3, then we recommend you to save some hard cash and get the iPad mini 2 at a lesser price tag.
