Samsung launched the much-anticipated Gear S3 at the ongoing IFA in Berlin. Unlike previous iterations of Gear smartwatches, Samsung launched two variants of the Gear S3 dubbed as the Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic.
Samsung intent is to clearly tackle the market leading Apple Watch. The South Korean giant has done pretty well in previous generations and competed well in the market.
In this article, we have compared the specifications and features of the newly announced Gear S3 range of smartwatches with the already existing Apple Watch.
Both the Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic feature a relatively bigger screen diameter with 46mm , it will be huge when compared to the Apple Watch as it has a screen diameter of 42mm.
However, the Gear S3's have relatively smaller display than the with 1.3-inch AMOLED panel with the resolution standing at 360*360. Having said that, the Apple Watch comes with a screen size of 1.3-inch AMOLED panel with 390*312 resolution.
Processor and RAM
While the Apple Watch comes with a relatively less powerful processor as they embed their own chipsets and the Apple Watch has an Apple S1 chip which is clocked at 520MHz. And, the Gear S3's share the same chipset which is a dual core one clocked at 1GHz.
Also, the Apple Watch has less RAM when compared to the Gear watches. The newly announced watches features 768MB of RAM which is bigger than the 521MB RAM seen on Apple Watch.
Apple Watch is the clear winner over here as it's an old one when compared to recently announced Gear watches. The Apple Watch comes with internal storage of 8GB, whereas the Gear watches has only 4GB of internal storage.
Tizen OS vs WatchOS 2
The Apple Watch OS is comparatively effective than the Samsung's Tizen OS. The Tizen OS is still in development stages and the WatchOS is significantly getting better and better day by day. Apple will also start pushing the WatchOS 3 after the official launch of Apple Watch 2.
Samsung Gear S3- Battery Winner
When checking at the battery capacities, the Apple Watch comes with a smaller 250mAh battery which can deliver up to 22 hours of battery life and the Gear S3 series comes with a bigger 380mAh battery, which as per the company can last up to 4 hours.
While both manufacturers added supported water resistant properties to the smartwatches, but none of them have revealed how long can they stay in the water.
Also, the Gear S3 Frontier which is limited to some markets will also allow you to insert a 4G enabled SIM card which is a beautiful addition.
