Xiaomi launched their Mi Band wearable in 2014 and changed the fitness tracking market forever. With an extremely cost-effective alternative to players like Fitbit and Sony, Xiaomi's Mi Band quickly rose to the top ranks in wearable shipment volumes.
In a press announcement last week, the company's chairman, Lei Jun, said that the Xiaomi smartwatch was indeed the next big step after launching the Mi Band 2. All rumors have been confirmed and here is all the gossip about Xiaomi's upcoming smartwatch.
A circular display
Smartwatches in the Android ecosystem currently come in mostly two shapes - round and square. With different audiences for each of the sizes, Xiaomi might be launching a smartwatch with a circular display because that seems to be more aesthetically pleasing and also in sync with Xiaomi's latest smartwatch that was launched for children.
Android Wear compatibility
Xiaomi's current smartphone and tablet range runs solely on skins that are based on top of Android OS (except Mi Pad 2 with Dual-Boot). So, it might not come as a surprise if the Xiaomi smartwatch will be based on Google's wearable UI, Android Wear. It will be compatible with Android 4.2 and above as well as iOS 8. Whether Xiaomi is developing a custom wearable skin on top of Android Wear, is something we do not know yet.
When it comes to pricing their products, Xiaomi is one company that never fails to disappoint. Their smartphones are usually priced at 50% of what other OEMs charge for the same internals. Therefore, the pricing of the smartwatch will be quite cost-effective, is what we know. Also, their children's smartwatch is priced at just CNY 299 or Rs. 3,000, so we can imagine what's coming for us.
Xiaomi is launching their Mi Max smartphone and Mi Band 2 fitness tracker at an event on May 10 in China. While the CEO has announced that a smartwatch would be launched soon, we highly doubt that it will arrive as soon as May 10 because no details of certification or that sort have been leaked yet. We are expecting it to launch somewhere in Q2 2016, in the month of June or July.
