With iOS being considered the archetypal smartphone platform, 'Asha Touch' has been classified as a smartphone platform too. This is Nokia's old S40 feature phone platform with widescreen displays and touch.

With an open environment for third-party application development, these new devices of Nokia offer a fluid ‘swipe' user interface. These characteristics have attributed the smartphone classification to the Asha Touch series as per analysts and research companies worldwide.

However Nokia has come up with another distinct application in the form of Nokia Nearby, aimed at providing users with a new way to discover things around them.

Based on the popularity of the Asha phones in the emerging markets the applications have been advertised by the company on Asha 308 smartphone in India.
Nokia Nearby, an additional application to Nokia Maps 2.0, is an innovative 'Hyper-Local Search' application where users can look for information regarding local places within their reach. They can use it via the Nokia Xpress Browser.

The application helps users to search, discover and share places even if they are not sure of what to look for. Malls, restaurants, cinema halls, etc can be tracked on mobiles without maps using this application.

Asha Touch and Series 40 devices will now feature Nokia's Xpress cloud-based internet platform which is normally available only higher end models.
Nokia's share of the smartphone market was once sky high at 60 percent with Symbian and S60. With the Asha Touch devices being sold worldwide in the developing markets it is expected there will be a significant rise in the percentage figures.
