Prasar Bharti DD, AIR Apps: Golden Chance to Revisit India's Glorious Past
We all grew up watching Ramayana, Mahabharata and many other fantastic tales used to telecast on DD in early 1990s. That was an era before the coming of Star Plus and Zee TV in the history of Indian television.
Since then Doordarshan, a government of India owned channel hasn't achieved much. It could be because of lack of connectivity with young brigade. On the other hand, All India Radio (AIR) was left far behind private FM channels owned by famed media houses.
No doubt AIR has maintained its quality, but to better communicate- the government broadcaster should adopt new channels of media to survive the apocalypse.
Now Prasar Bharati, who operates DD and AIR, has decided to venture into the world of apps. As more and more users, especially youngsters, have adopted smartphones and tablets, to feed them the public broadcaster is prepping to announce DD and AIR apps.
With DD and AIR set for a second inning; all the rare content, for instance, Byomkesh Bakshi, will be accessed in the near future
The struggling public broadcaster may opt for subscription based model. The content will be digitally re-mastered. The apps should be out in next six months. For revenue generation advertisements seem an appropriate choice.
Of lately, Prasar Bharti has been actively promoting digitization through DTH services or through AIR Blogs. DD is already selling DVDs of its popular serials. For instance, a DVD of Shyam Benegal's ‘Bharat Ek Khoj' can be purchased for Rs. 5000. It would not only give DD, an additional source of income, but also gives audience to go back to their glorious past. Stay tuned to GizBot.
