You Can Now Use Your Fingerprint or Face to Approve UPI Payments on Amazon Pay
Amazon Pay has rolled out UPI biometric authentication in India, allowing users to approve eligible UPI transactions using a fingerprint or face scan instead of entering a PIN. The feature is now available for Android users and applies to transactions within a defined value limit.

Biometric Authentication Limited to Smaller Transactions
At launch, Amazon Pay’s biometric authentication applies to UPI transactions of up to ₹5,000. Payments above this threshold will continue to require standard PIN verification, in line with existing UPI security practices.
For eligible transactions, users can rely on the biometric system already present on their smartphone. This includes fingerprint sensors and facial recognition, depending on the device. The biometric data itself remains stored on the device and is not shared externally.
Supported Payment Flows Within Amazon Pay
The biometric option is available across commonly used UPI flows inside the Amazon Pay app. This includes peer-to-peer money transfers, scan-and-pay transactions at physical stores, merchant payments, and balance checks.
From a user perspective, the flow remains largely unchanged, except for the final authentication step. Instead of entering a PIN, users are prompted to verify the payment using biometrics.
Android-Only Availability for Now
Amazon Pay has confirmed that the feature is currently limited to Android devices. There’s no clarity yet on whether biometric UPI authentication will be extended to other platforms.
What This Means for UPI Usage
UPI has become a default payment method for everyday transactions in India, especially for small-value payments. By introducing biometric authentication for these use cases, Amazon Pay is testing whether fewer steps at checkout translate into faster and more frequent usage.
At the same time, the ₹5,000 cap ensures that higher-value transactions continue to follow established security norms. How widely users adopt biometric approval over PIN-based authentication will likely become clearer over time as awareness grows.
