UPI Transaction Limits in India: A Comprehensive Guide
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm have become integral to financial transactions across India. From small retail stores to large shops, digital transactions are now widely supported. This article delves into the daily transaction limits for UPI apps as set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
According to NPCI guidelines, the standard limit for most UPI transactions is Rs 1 lakh per day. This applies to regular daily transactions. However, specific sectors have different limits. For instance, educational institutions and hospitals have a higher limit of Rs 5 lakh per day, effective from December 8, 2023.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) increased these limits from the previous cap of Rs 1 lakh. Similarly, UPI transactions related to insurance can go up to Rs 2 lakh per day. For Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and retail direct schemes, the transaction limit is set at Rs 5 lakh per transaction.
Individual banks can also impose their own terms and conditions on UPI transactions. HDFC Bank, for example, has set a limit of Rs 1 lakh or 20 transactions per day for person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. Customers reaching this limit must wait 24 hours before resuming transactions.
Third-Party App Restrictions
For additional third-party UPI apps, the number of allowed transactions is capped at 10 per day. Knowing these limits is crucial for ensuring smooth transactions, whether for daily purchases or larger payments to educational institutions and hospitals.
Security and Usage
The increasing use of UPI apps is attributed to their high-security levels. The method of transferring money through UPI apps and scanning QR codes for small purchases has seen significant growth. This trend highlights the convenience and security that UPI offers.
